Support for the Password Manager Roboform

I would like to request support for the Password manager Roboform.

I don't want to come across as a jerk - but I just cant fathom how people can recommend 1Password but never mention Roboform - the #1 Password Tool since the late 90's

What is it about 1Password that makes people want to support it? Does it do something that Roboform does not?

Now that I have finally looked. I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

Roboform

  1. Mac Native App (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
  2. Windows Native App (IE, Opera, Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
  3. Linux Native App(...)
  4. iOS (because 1Password does it I have to mention: iPhone + iPad sorry)
  5. Android
  6. Blackberry

1Password

  1. Mac Native App
  2. Windows Native App
  3. iOS (it is a universal app just like Roboform's)
  4. Android

This info is straight of their web pages. Now (again, I do have a point where I will ask my questions).

Now. Look at the prices. This was a shock.

Roboform (Anywhere):  $9.99 first year, $19.99 per year after.

  1. Users: 1
  2. # of Macs usage allowed on: unlimited
  3. # of PCs usage allowed on: unlimited
  4. Price of iOS app:  FREE
  5. Includes all upgrades: YES
  6. (Things i didn't care about I didn't mention like android, blackberry and linux)

1Password (1Password Mac + Windows Bundle): $69.99 for the current version

  1. Users: 1
  2. # of Macs usage allowed on: unlimited
  3. # of PCs usage allowed on: unlimited
  4. Price of iOS app:  (On SALE NOW "HALF"-OFF: $7.99 normally $17.99) Not my math...
  5. Includes all upgrades: NO (website does mention free upgrade to next version, but v4 is like days/weeks away)
  6. (Things i didn't care about I didn't mention like android, blackberry and linux)

Like I said - this isn't a rant about 1Password. I have real questions.

  1. Why did you choose to support 1Password
  2. Have you ever used Roboform? Or heard of it?
  3. Are you a 1Password user?
  4. Did you consider supporting Roboform?
  5. Is there anything Roboform can do/support that would make it more appealing?

Here's what 1Password has to say about pricing: http://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/11034/1password-vs-roboform-everywhere

So I'd at least like to take answers to the above back to them, and if anyone else want to chime in thats fine - I'll read. I'd just assume not hear the (B is better because A didn't work for me but B did). Responses like that rarely come from competent users, and taking advice from incompetent users is foolish.

OS X 10.9 is going to shake up this space a bit - it needs it.

Now the ugly bit. I feel ashamed to ask this - I just must know. There are so many product placements for 1Password which never mention Roboform it is just sad. I just want to make sure of something:

  1. Did you receive anything for supporting 1Password in your app? Such as you would have for a product placement?

Thank You,

Jon

Lots of interesting questions and points you make, I'm not sure Alfred's forum is the right place for that, but let me answer the following...

Vero and I have been long time 1Password users. We have had many hundreds of requests for native 1Password integration into Alfred. With these two things combined, it felt very natural to add native 1Password integration into Alfred. At no point have we ever done any product placement in either Alfred or our website, for 1Password or any other app.

On the flip side, this is the first time both Vero and I have heard of Roboform, and the first time anyone has asked for integration into Alfred. As such, it's extremely unlikely that this will be natively integrated into Alfred. Having said that, you could still create a fantastic workflow which works exactly how the 1Password one works. If you need help with this, you could pop a request in the Workflow help forum.

Cheers,

Andrew

FWIW, 1Password also provides a very simple way for third-party apps to integrate its bookmarks.

Roboform does not provide any means of third-party integration.

As a result, it would be very difficult (likely impossible) for Alfred to include its passwords or for someone to write a workflow for it.

There are a couple of Lastpass workflows because Lastpass also provides a way for other applications to interact with it.

It's somewhat offtopic to this forum, but i'm also totally puzzled by almost complete ignorance of the Roboform in the apple community. As a password manager it is a very solid solution, and there are areas where it is better than 1password. Myself i've been using 1password once i switched to mac and i can see that 1password is lot more "mac-y" but still i can't understand why roboform is not mentioned at least half as much as 1password.

It's not a solid solution. Its security is terrible, terrible, terrible.

The fact that the homepage is very light on encryption implementation details is a red flag (as is the fact that the whole thing is written in JavaScript). So I looked into it, and it turns out Lastpass security is rubbish and RoboForm security is practically non-existent.

In particular, RoboForm uploads (or it did in 2013) all your passwords (including your master password) in plain text. This is utterly, absolutely unacceptable.

The connection may be encrypted with SSL, but the fact remains that RoboForm (and its employees) have access to your plaintext passwords.

Lastpass doesn't do that, but the website password is derived from your master password in a way that makes it extremely easy to crack, again making you vulnerable to Lastpass, its employees and any other entity that can access its data.

1Password at least tries to do security properly.

The fact that it is a local application, not a browser-based one, gives it a significant advantage over other solutions. If your password manager is browser based, then it suffers from all the same security problems browsers do (XSS, CSRF etc.) and is potentially running in the same process as malicious code (hijacked or malicious websites).

A browser is possibly the worst choice of platform for a password manager.
