Search Scope by Tags?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Is it possible in a workflow to limit the search scope to files with a certain tag?

Thanks!

Giovanni

By default, you can search based on tags, using the keyword "tags" followed by a tag you've set on your files.

Alternatively, to search by tags in a workflow, create a file filter workflow and go to the File Filter object's "Advanced" tab. Click on the + in the bottom right of the "Fields" box and choose kMDItemUserTags. This will allow you to search tags with your workflow.

Let me know if you need more information - I'll most likely create a blog post with tips for using tags in the next week or two! :)

Thanks Alfred's Mum!

Is it possible to preset a filter based on a predefined tag value? Something like this:

My goal is to search by name, but only within files with a specific tag (as opposed to files within a specific folder which I can set in the search scope).

Thanks!!

Giovanni

Hi Giovanni,

Apologies for the oversight - I thought I'd already replied to your message!

Your message inspired me to write a more detailed blog post on using tags to search with Alfred, so you can take a look here:

The third way to search is what you'll be looking for :)

  • 1 year later...

I started using tags to better filter my files on my mac and I want to make a workflow that would give me a list of my tags. For example I trigger a hotkey and it will show me a list of current tags that I use with a number of files that are tagged with this tag. Then I can scroll through and select one I need, press return and I will be greeted with all the files that are in that tag. I can then search for the file I need.

Can I do this?

Thank you for any help.

Thank you for the article. It was very useful. Is it possible to make a trigger to search for the specific tag but when the alfred window comes up, the results will be shown already in the window?

For example, right now I trigger my specific tag search with a hotkey and I get this window :

It's empty.

I wish, I add a trigger, press it and it will show all the files in that current tag already like this :

Write now I need to press space every time after the trigger and I am not even sure that would show me all the files.

Thank you for any help.

In that case, set the hotkey object as follows (where in this example, I want to search for the "test" tag)

This will show the Alfred window with the text pre-filled in and the relevant results below (in this case, a single file tagged "test")
