The settings window says "Web bookmarks", and I've checked the "Safari Bookmarks" button. Yet, it include all my +1000 items in the Safari reading list.
These are definitely not bookmarks, regardless if they reside in the same file as the bookmarks. And if you have +1000 items like me, it really sucks when you want to find that special bookmark.
