I suddenly discovered that my Alfred 2 dialog had a "tophat", with icons for the first 3 applications in my /Applications folder. Clicking on the icons would indeed run the application. I couldn't find mention of this feature in the preferences and by a quick scan of this forum. But I wasn't sure what to look for.
It looked like 3 small application icons on a tab attached to the top left of the Alfred dialog. As mentioned, they were the first 3 applications chosen alphabetically.
It disappeared when I restarted Alfred.
Is this a hidden feature for a future release or does it serve a useful purpose now?
For me I didn't see a point to it. Having slightly quicker/click-ier access to just 3 out of my dozens of apps didn't make sense, and I didn't see how to configure it.
I wasn't able to grab a screenshot.
