  1. "Good" to hear that it is not just me having these problems. The output seems pretty strange as calebaharrison has mentioned. I also have this issues if I type two letters, I get one or two names. If I type the correct name, I get no results.

I really hope you can fix this as this is certainly the workflow that would make things complete in terms of producing academic output :-)

  2. Many thanks for working on this. Awesome! I would have needed it a while ago when working on my PhD :-) Never mind, this is very much appreciated. though, I am struggling a little bit with the workflow as the search of my database seems to be nor working perfectly. I can't find the entrance I am looking for.

An additional feature, and I am not sure whether this is actually possible, would be to insert the citation automatically in the text editor (I am using Scrivener and when pressing Cmd+y in Bookends, the citation is automatically inputted into Scrivener).

    Cheers!

  3. Hi All:

Anyone here using Bookends as Reference Management and Bibliography Software? If yes, anyone willing to start working on a workflow or help me. I am completely without knowledge how to do this. Any help or willingness to work on such a workflow would be highly appreciated. Feel free to PM me.

    Thanks!

  4. Hi All,

I am often using the feature to move files to another folder just typing "Move to..." then search for the folder. It works smoothly, but only if the file I want to move doesn't exists in the destination folder. Alfred seems to does not allow me to overwrite existing files. Is it my fault or is it just not possible?

    Cheers

  5. Hi, I am having some trouble with another workflow and was wondering if it is possible to use just one command to start the translation. At the moment I need to hit "en" for an translation into German and "de" for a translation into english. However, it would be great if I could just write "de" and get a translation depending of the word I am writing, regardless of the language. The workflow would need to automatically identify which language the word is and give me the output accordingly.

    Is this possible?

    Cheers

  6. Yeah, great that would be very useful to get another output format, if possible (which I think it is).

And yes, the suggestions you have made are exactly the ones I was currently thinking about. Mainly the ones I use regularly at work.

    Cheers!

  7. Thanks for this perfect workflow. It would be great to have the output in a smaller way or as a sort of "live output" just like the normal calculations I can do within Alfred.

Besides percentage change it would be great to get the basics of calculations of percentage, e.g. the percentage of something.

Just my first thoughts, will think about this in more detail as this workflow is just awesome as I assume I will use it very often.

    Thanks for that!

  8. I am not sure what exactly you want to do with your workflow. If you want to write an Email, there is such an option within Alfred. There are also other workflows around here for mailing.

You could just change the keyword you use to start the workflow, e.g. "Email" (although this is used within Alfred itself).

  9. Yeah, as I have been dealing with students before I can well imagine what you mean. Working myself in a research institute, it is even difficult to convince colleagues to switch to useful software for research. It is just hard to change the way they work - the few I have convinced to look at some powerful software were very pleased in the end :-)

As I  like working with Alfred I just try to get as much as possible sorted, organized and done with Alfred.

  10. @dfay: Thanks for your thoughts. I of course use a bibliography software. The one I use is called Bookends. This helps me to organize all my citations the same way as BibDesk. Of course, with Bookends I can create smart folders where I can tag references and call the smart folder "to read". That would be possible. As Alfred is a pretty easy way of searching for files on your computer, it would be great to create, as I said and as Allsop mentioned it again in his last post, a short reading list for a specific issue I am currently dealing with. Lets say, the next 5-10 documents. This is a different thought in mind to the one I guess you had in mind when writing your post. Marking the 100+ documents which I generally still need to read, Bookends is good to do this. Alfred is just the easy way, as I can directly and easily open the document with no need to switch software all the time.

Generally, I am using Alfred, Scrivener and Bookends for my PhD and other research. This is a pretty powerful combination I think. DevonThink might be a useful contribution, just need to take a closer look at it. It might be also useful to look at BibDesk again, although I don't see that much advantage compared to Bookends.

Of course all files are named the same way, thus they are easy to find on my computer.

Therefore, Vitors Workflow is pretty useful, although for my purposes it could need some adjustments to make it better for PDFs. But never mind, as Vitor has said, he created it for other purposes.

  11. Allsop, thanks for your thoughts. Maybe you are right and I should spent some more time getting used to DevonThink.

Vitor, that is perfect! This is what I was looking for. Many, many thanks!! Is is not that I am looking for a tool to set up a list of 50+ documents that I need to read, it is more like 5-10 in the near future or for a specific chapter/section, though your workflow looks very much of help! Thanks!

@Vitor: It would be great, if possible, to allow quick look (pressing shift) within the workflow. Not sure if this is possible.

  12. Yeah, you are right, tagging or flagging documents would be a solution. I am kind of working with DevonThink, but it does not convince me - maybe I should look at it again. I have a good overview over my documents and since I search for them with Alfred it would be easy to create such a list within Alfred to not open or use another program. I am working with Alfred +  Scrivener + Bookends and would love to keep the number of programs to a minimum. Maybe such a workflow would be a nice addition. Would it be possible to use the native OS X tags with Alfred, this might be of help.

    Thanks!

  13. Hi All,

I am currently working on my PhD and have around 1000 PDF documents stored in my research folder. Although all are named the same way and they are easy to find, I am looking for a way to create some sort of "PDF reading list" by which I can make a list of PDF documents that I need to read later. At the moment I have some 10+ documents opened in the preview and minimize them - not the best way. I came across the buffer option in Alfred, which is wonderful, unfortunately as alt+backspace deletes all items in the buffer I constantly delete all items there as this is the usual combination I use when I delete some text.

Having said this, I am looking for a workflow that allows me to create a reading list but for PDFs that are already stored and saved on my computer. It might be possible to solve this problem through a workflow - it would be just necessary to say something like this "add item/pdf document to a list" If I hit a keyword the list of marked PDF documents would show up and I can click on them to start reading them. Maybe anyone has an idea or a suggestions or even an app that can do this.

If it is unclear what I mean, please let me know and I try to describe my "problem" in more detail.

    Many thanks for your help!

  14. I would like to bring this up again in order not to open a new thread. After using Alfred extensively, I came across the buffer function and I think this is awesome. I was actually looking for something like a PDF-Reading list, just like a reading list you have in Safari or other applications. I can perfectly use the buffer function for that.

However, I use Alt + Backspace quit regularly to clear text and so far have accidentally cleared my buffer list from Alfred. Of course it is my mistake, but I was wondering if there might be the chance in the future to be able to change the shortcuts or implement a function like "stick there forever until an action is taken". By that I could avoid to accidentally erase the files I put in the buffer.

Hope this became clear, happy to clarify it more precisely.

Edit: Just had a look again and switched on the Compability option, which works fine with the option of Alt+ up arrow but still does not avoid me from deleting all items in the buffer through ALT + Backspace.

Btw: If anyone has an idea for an application for a PDF reading list or has an workflow for Alfred, please let me know. Thanks!

  15. Hi, your workflow is great! Just want to change the gi search to German. I just changed the .com to .de, now it says in the instant.rb "arg      => URI.escape("http://www.google.de/search?as_q=#{query}&lr=lang_")"

Is this correct? Anything else that I need to change? It unfortunately does not work at the moment, only provides outputs for the english google. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks!
