Alfred PDF Tools v3 has just been released.

I think I have it working now. The delay was due to the difficulty of either bundling the pyobjc dependency or requiring users to install it. In the end, I avoided the problem by porting the affected code to AppleScript. An updated version is available at the link below. I will remove pre-release marking once I hear that it is working from a few users.

When changing APIs to speed it up, that may change.

Big changes were made in v3. Unfortunately, because of macOS constraints regarding unsigned binaries, the adoption of pikepdf made the new version around 5 seconds slower. Making the new version faster would require the user either installing pikepdf manually or allowing a large amount of binaries, which I decided to avoid.

Any feedback about v3 is appreciated.

Thanks to @katiefor testing beta builds before v3 release.

That’s insufficient information to debug. You haven’t shared what you’re getting (no idea which apps are open) or what you expected to get, or what exactly is open. From your description alone, it seems to be working as intended.

A cursory glance reveals that Workflow is unmaintained, has open issues, requests more permissions, and requires users to bypass the unsigned binary. But I had no idea it existed, so can’t comment on functionality. Naturally you should use whichever you prefer, it’s a good thing that people share their different approaches. It is a fair point that the Workflow is slower than could be. I’m aware of that and do have plans (and code) to address it, but no ETA yet.

Notificator integration to the library is done. It's really straightforward and alfredish. Thanks, Vítor!

    Intel or Apple Silicon?

Restart your computer, then remove everything and follow the instructions to reinstall Python 2 again. Paste the Terminal output here, with the commands.

@giovanni I think @xilopaint may agree a good rule of thumb when submitting a PR is to think “is this a change the author would have done themselves?”. Ultimately a PR ends up as code in their own repo, under their name and reputation. You still get credit in the commit history and as a contributor. Some repos also have an explicit document.

If you make a fork and continue to develop in a different direction from the original and are not submitting your changes back, then it makes sense to change the bundle ID because they become two different tools. When you make a PR you’re contributing for there to only be one good tool most can agree on.

PRs are generally preferred to forks. The latter comes into play when there’s no reasonable way to proceed with the former (e.g. the original developer has abandoned the project and does not want to transfer ownership).

Made a few small updates. Added support for the new notificator and removed support for the old one and terminal-notifier. I also improved the process of getting packages from GitHub, to ensure a .alfredworkflow is downloaded.

You don’t have to add the new version to your Workflow if you don’t want and it’s working fine; nothing was broken, the behaviour is the same.

@xilopaint I have revamped Notificator. No intensive testing yet, but it seems to work as expected. I’ll soon substitute it in all my Workflows. It’s now way more Alfred-centric, and expects to be run from inside a Workflow environment.

Notificator is released to the public domain, so you do not have to credit me for the inclusion. That said, because you will be adding it to a library instead of a stand-alone Workflow, I’d appreciate a note about it linking back to the original. That is so if people have suggestions or comments or complaints, they do so at the source and I can improve it for everyone.

If I understood it correctly, Alfred PDF Tools covers this workflow features in a more efficient way.

I'm just waiting for your decision about Notificator to release a new Python 3 version of the workflow.

I will work on it behaving as we discussed. I should have something this week, barring some unpredictable factor. The interface isn’t yet complete in my head, so I may be forgetting to consider something.

Please ping me when you do, so I can link to it on the table as an alternative.

Remain. That continues to be the default location on Intel processors, the new location is for ARM. Both can be installed at the same time.

    Correct.

I'm a music teacher. I've tried to learning Javascript (for apps like Drafts and Omni Automation) before but I haven't really been successful. My interest in learning Python would only be to write my own Alfred workflows, but others are doing a good enough job that the fact I'll probably never find the time doesn't bother me. Alfred speeds up my work more than anything else, and while I'd love to be able to take that further, I probably won't ever be in a position to.

Thanks for this workflow, I just found it and really like it.
If you are still open for new features I think it would be really nice to be able to change the sort filter (new/rising/top:all time/top:today).

I'm not sure if it would lead to problems with the search by just typing in "r/funny/new". If so there could be a prefix for the sort filter (r/funny/:new).
If this would be possible it could maybe work like this:
    "r/funny/new"  -> will open "https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/new/"
"r/funny/new/" -> will show the posts sorted by new
