One of my Macs is only used about once every week. Every time I use it, it seems that Alfred needs to update.

Now, I'm completely grateful that Alfred is a well-maintained app, and I rely on it for my workflow. It absolutely makes my life better in measurable ways. The powerpack, also, is well worth purchasing. However, being nagged constantly to update stinks.

    Why not do this:

    - without prompting the user, download updates in the background.
    - whenever alfred is restarted, if there is a downloaded update available, install it silently.
    - when a downloaded update is available, update the menu bar icon to have a red exclamation point on it, and add "restart to upgrade"
    - add "Update available. Click here to restart and upgrade." or similar on the search bar.

This is the direction applications like Chrome and Firefox have take, and it works very well. Of course, major version upgrades, such as those that would require a new PowerPack license, would not work this way.

Tyler Eich reacted to aharriscrowne in Drag and drop for File buffer
I would propose an icon in the file buffer that is draggable and represents all the files in the buffer.  That way it is a matter of dragging a single item or dragging the catch-all icon. I too regularly use Alfred for locating files to add to email or to projects, and it would be much easier if I could do the final step all at once rather than repeat it for each separate item.

Well, this isn't a Workflow to be shared, but I figure that this is the most appropriate place for this post.

I've been developing a robust repository for Workflows and Themes, and the site itself is ready for testing (there is a companion Workflow that still needs further development, and the site won't be made public until the Workflow is ready). I've been in conversations with Andrew about how best to go about it, and, so far, he seems pleased (but, there is no official endorsement).

So, can you help test it out for me? I'm especially looking for people who will contribute Workflows and/or Themes so that the more advanced, and breakable, aspects of the site can get better testing.

If you're interested, send me an email at rice [-at-] shawnrice.org, and I'll direct you to the site. Please do so only if you're willing to send me feedback about what needs to be improved and about what might break.

Tyler Eich got a reaction from David in Wolfram|Alpha workflow
I converted David Ferguson's Wolfram|Alpha extension to a workflow (and made some tweaks along the way  )

It requires you have an AppID of your own (get one here). Note: Make sure you wait a few minutes before entering the code; Wolfram|Alpha's servers seem to take a moment to register the AppID.

It provides feedback with the answer and input interpretation. If you action an item, it will output all the available information to Growl. Pressing ⌥↩ will copy the answer to the clipboard; ⌘↩ will open your query in Wolfram|Alpha (in the default browser).

Here's a picture of the workflow editor:

Here's what it looks like in action:

    Hope you like it!

Similar to the File Filter UI, but instead of utilizing it to determine a file type, allow the user to add to a bucket of files/folders that Alfred then takes some specific action(s) on.

For a specific example, I ran into this issue here:

Worked perfectly. Thanks for the confirmation I'm not crazy for thinking this should be built in to Alfred. Will make that feature suggestion!

Most of the workflows I installed is from this Github repo.

    https://github.com/zenorocha/alfred-workflows

However, I did find those workflows are being updated very frequently, so manual update is somehow tedious.

It would be better if Alfred can implement a way to check whether remote alfredworkfllow files have been updated or not, and autoupdate them if necessary.

Even better, implementing a Alfred workflows package manager would help both autoupdate and discover new packages.

It would be helpful for people, just like me, accidentally send files to Trash.

I know the "Move to" action does exist, but in all honesty, I am too lazy (Thanks to Alfred  ).

More seriously, "Move to" action would never be as fast as a "Put back" action could be.

    Hi,

I'd love to have the oppertunity to allow auto-updating: just download the latest version when connected to the internet and start installing it. The only popup i'd like to see is entering the username and password for my computer, to allow the installer to make changes to the Alfred app.

Was not sure if to create a new thread or just append to this one so did the latter. It would be great if the ability to calculate time duration could be implemented, for example I would type the following = 8:30 AM - 6:15PM and the value of 10:15 would be displayed. The implementation of the Excel calculations on the following link would be great or at least the basic one (=TEXT(B2-A2,"h:mm")

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/calculate-the-difference-between-two-times-HP003056108.aspx

I believe it would be of great value to anyone in the work force, I noticed quite a few people have a separate excel (or numbers) document open just do this this calculation.

Tyler Eich got a reaction from smarg19 in Adding 'scopes' to Hotkeys
I like this idea a lot

Say I have a workflow that only interfaces with certain applications (e.g. browsers); instead of getting frustrated with code that checks which app is in the foreground, Alfred automatically blocks or allows my workflow's hotkeys based on which app he detects is frontmost.

This concept could be extended to any input (hotkeys, keywords, script filters, file filters, etc.). Say you have several script filters, each with the keyword 'tabs'; one filter's scope is 'Safari' & 'Webkit', another's is 'Chrome' & 'Chrome Canary' & 'Chromium', and another's is 'Camino'. When Chrome is active, typing 'tabs' into Alfred launches only the code necessary to get Chrome's tabs; when in Safari, a different code base is used.

Scoping could be applied to an entire workflow or individual objects

Context-aware workflows would be incredibly powerful and extend Alfred's intelligence

+1 for this idea (if you couldn't tell from my comments  )

    Here here!

For now I use CopyLess which allows dragging the clipboard contents out as a file including images if the app puts it on the clipboard in a supported way. It'd just be nice to have it all in one.

I still run LaunchBar (which I had purchased before switching to Alfred) solely for it's clipboard history (to fill the only real gap in Alfred's functionality).  A new Alfred clipboard history that can reliably recall my last ~40 clipboard entries (like LaunchBar does) without cherry picking only certain types of content (like Alfred currently does) would allow me to finally drop LaunchBar altogether.  I've looked at other clipboard history tools, but they are all too heavy with unnecessary bells & whistles that make them less efficient than LaunchBar's approach.

You could also background the server startup commands. It would give you fewer windows. Then, if you wanted, you could make another workflow (or add on to that one with a new keyword/argument) that would just kill the rails and postgres server.

To delay, look into the "sleep" command. So, just have it sleep for like two seconds. I haven't opened the workflow, so I don't  know which language you did it in, but for most, it's pretty much something like 'sleep(2);' or 'sleep 200' depending on whether the function interprets it as milliseconds or seconds.

Lastly, you could open the Sublime Text 2 with Applescript and then script the menus with System Events. You'd have to wait a second and not touch the computer while it blows through the menu commands for you... but it is possible.

I made an altered version of my Wolfram|Alpha workflow that only searches area codes. If you're curious how it's done, you can ask or check out the code in the workflow

Tyler Eich got a reaction from daehn in Store images in Alfred's clipboard history, allow images in clipboard snippets
It would be really cool if Alfred had an option for storing images in Clipboard History. Plain text is easy to search and light on resources, but limiting if you rely on images (e.g. graphic designer).

When using snippets and/or workflow clipboard objects, {clipboard} should be able to inject images stored in the Clipboard.

This would obviously increase Alfred's memory usage; if implemented, it should definitely be optional. Maybe even separate settings that set limits on how big a stored image can be (just like the current implementation for text clipping size).

    Cheers
