    Grug reacted to pseudometa in [Alfred 5.5] QuickPad – scratchpad, toggled with one hotkey
    Played a bit around with the 5.5 Beta and textview. Came up with this very simple workflow, consisting completely of building blocks provided by Alfred (no code).

    It brings up a simple scratchpad via hotkey, and hides the scratchpad again with the same hotkey. The file content can be saved via cmd+enter, and previewed via shift+enter. Main caveat of this workflow is that cmd+enter is the *only* available method of saving the content – cmd+s does not work, and (as far as I can tell) it's not possible to have the note content saved when using esc on the text view.
    Simple solution, which nonetheless replaced my need for a separate scratchpad app

    The last point should fix your case, @jr5.

    This is simple enough and looks quite ready to go in the Gallery, but I have a few suggestions:
    You don’t need the Run Script, you can and should instead use the Run Shortcut automation. That would make it use no code and be a good candidate for the “Good for Learning” category. Would be useful to add a Hotkey Trigger too. I can imagine someone using e.g. ⌘⇧6 to take the screenshot and get the text. By the way: nice use of the Automation Task.

    This workflow is loosely based on my Save 'ur URL workflow (which, judging by the number of downloads, has proved very popular).

    Introduction
    Sometimes when working you want to make a short, temporary quick note for future reference without bothering to open a dedicated Notes app. That is what this workflow does. It uses a simple plain text file (which will be created for you when you first create a note by running the workflow) to which saved notes will be appended (rather like a scratch pad). You select the location folder for that file in the workflow configuration.

    However, the workflow does a little more than that. You can also save text clippings by selecting text and using your Universal Action hot key on the selected text.

    Setup
    In the workflow configuration choose:
    - the folder where you want to keep your QuickNote.txt file;
    - the keyword you want to use to create a quick note;
    - the keyword you want to use to open the QuickNote.txt file;
    - the keyword you want to use to delete the QuickNote.txt file.

    Usage—saving quick notes
    There are two ways in which to create a quick note.

    1. You can use your Universal Action hotkey on selected text, choose Save a quick note from the list and press ⏎. The selected text will be saved in the quick notes file (which is created if it does not already exist) together with the date and time the note was appended.

    2. You can use the keyword set to create a quick note and type the text of the note. In that case that you must type a single line of text (with spaces and punctuation as necessary, of course): you cannot use newlines or returns to create a multi-line note. (There is no such restriction if you are copying selected text as in 1 above.)

    The result of saving quick notes will be a plain text file which you can open in your default file editor by using the relevant keyword set in the workflow configuation (by default vqn for "view quick notes").

    Here's what it looks like in CotEditor (which is my default plain text editor):

    Usage—deleting the quick notes file
    Simply use the keyword set in the workflow configuration (by default dqn for "delete quick notes") to move the quick notes file to the Trash.

    Edit: I should have said there are no dependencies forthis workflow.

    Grug reacted to vitor in Standard Workflow Object + Alfred-UI for obtaining API tokens
    You missed the biggest one: millions of dollars in VC funding. That’s quite difficult for Alfred to go up against with a two-person team for everything in the business. When you have money to burn, it’s easy to offer features for free despite a big team. That’s not to say you’re wrong on the other points—you’re not—but Alfred’s team has to (more) carefully choose where to invest their time.

    I agree that’s a hurdle, but it’s not immediately clear how to clear it. It doesn’t help that Raycast themselves misrepresent (or outright lie about; I can’t say) what Alfred can do. I’ve seen it in the wild once or twice.

    Also note that their money buys them hype, and developers are inherently interested in new things. Their business model isn’t yet clear—will they be subscription-based, one-time purchase, will they sell your data before being bought by another company that will kill the app? And are they even targeting the same users as Alfred? From what I gather of their still closed API, their extensions will be exclusively built with code, which ignores a huge chunk of Alfred’s users (non-coders can and do make Workflows) and may not allow as much versatility (I don’t know). I could go on.

    That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth looking into Raycast. All I’m saying is it’s too soon to imagine a doomsday scenario for Alfred because of it. Besides being new and loaded, are they that different from other alternatives, such as Launchbar (not rhetorical)?

    That’s another one where I agree with you. But it’s also another one without an immediate solution. There are quite a few websites for discovering Workflows, but (in my view) none of them are up to snuff after Packal. Partly because—in agreement with a comment on the YouTube link you posted—it can be hard to identify a dead Workflow. That said, I don’t think it’s fair to lunge that criticism at Alfred on a direct comparison to another tool which hasn’t existed for long enough for that to be an issue. I see no reason why they would be immune to that.

    It’s been discussed at length on this issue why that’s not necessarily true. It’s a feature the vast majority of Workflows would not benefit from, hard to tackle, and at the mercy of the whims of third-parties. And to do all that you need time, which will not be used for something else. Yes, if that feature were implemented and maintained without effort (or done by someone else in a third-party tool, as suggested above) it could be a good thing. But it has a major tradeoff as it stands. Is that tradeoff worth it at this time? I’d argue “no”, but that’s only an opinion.

    Again, we all want Alfred to be better. And we all want Alfred to be as powerful as it can be as long as it doesn’t come at the expense of speed or stability. But every change you make has multiple costs; considering those before investing is wise.

    Grug reacted to Vero in "Find" command not navigating to file in the Finder
    @M4L @deanishe After some investigating a few days ago, Andrew was able to work out what's happening.

     It seems to be specifically related to the column view in Finder. If you change the default Finder view to items or list, then it works as expected.

    The workaround is to change the Finder view, or to use "Open File" instead of "Reveal in Finder", as this will open the folder in Finder, but also select it.

    This is clearly a bug in Catalina, and we tried various workarounds to this issue using Apple's APIs to no avail. You get the same behaviour if you cmd+return in Spotlight on a folder. This is a bug that didn't exist on the older Mojave version of macOS, but unfortunately is exhibited in Big Sur's latest beta.

    Cheers,
    Vero

    It is quite extensive in terms of what it can do. As a result there is a website for it rather than a single page.

    If it has dependencies, say what those are unless they are explicit in the About or README.
    This workflow is for interacting with the app Drafts (https://getdrafts.com - I would have entered this as a proper link, but the forum keeps throwing up "There was a problem loading this content" whenever I try and do that anywhere in this post), so that is a dependency.

    In addition, some of the more advanced functionality requires Python 3. Users who do not use Python 3 can still use a large proportion of the functionality, but not everything.

    More details on prerequisites are available here - https://doctordrafts.thoughtasylum.com/basic/installation/#pre-requisites

    Provide screenshots, unless valid ones are in the About or README.

    How to use it
    Doctor Drafts has almost 40 keyword triggers, 47 external call triggers, 4 file actions, 4 fallback searches, and 9 universal actions. Far too many to properly cram into readme. In fact, the website has well over 100 pages of documentation to help people utilise all aspects of the workflow, with the basics of using it receiving its own section (https://doctordrafts.thoughtasylum.com/basic/the-basics/), and the rest of the site going into full detail about the workflow, and how people can build their own extension flows to it as coverd in the extended use section (beginning with https://doctordrafts.thoughtasylum.com/extend/beyond-the-basics/).

    As a result, the readme simply refers people to Doctor Drafts' website.

    This workflow is a Universal Action which enables you to create a single new folder (with a name you choose) in your current active folder (i.e., where you have selected a file or files). It creates the folder and gives the option of moving the selected file(s) to the new folder.

    There are no dependencies but the workflow uses a number of Automation Tasks so you will need to ensure those are up-to-date.

Here's a version of the script that confirms the default browser switch automatically and can handle most bundle names, regardless of locale:
