Quicksilver Migration

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am a Quicksilver user migrating to Alfred.  I am guessing there a few of those here.  I am wondering what folks are doing to make up for some of the apparently missing features in Alfred that you used in Quicksilver.

In my case, I used QS's file manipulation commands extensibly.  E.g. to move and rename a download.  QS has a "Latest Download" proxy object.  Alfred does not, but I found the RecentDownloads workflow someone posted.  Thus, I can find the latest download and move it.  But unlike QS, when you reactivate Alfred, the last selected object is not preselected. That is too bad because it allows you to easily chain actions.

There also appears to be no Rename file operation.  How is that even possible?  It seems rather basic.

Is there a way to get Alfred to select a file it just moved?  Can't do that with ⌥ ⌘ / since that just takes you to the previous folder you navigated to in Alfred, not to the file you navigated within the folder or the file at the location you moved it to.

I guess the  ⌥ ⌘ \ is the equivalent of QS's Finder Selection proxy object.

QS also has a powerful User Interface plugin that allows you to use the keyboard to navigate an apps menus.  Anything like that for Alfred?

Not natively, but there’s a Workflow for it (disclaimer: I made it).

You can press ↑ after calling Alfred to recall the latest command, but what you appear to want is that even if you move a file somewhere, Alfred would detect that and suggest interacting with that file, wherever it went, is that correct? That is not currently possible, no.

Maybe Menu Search.

Thanks. I similarly solved it via a Workflow.  But it is something so basic that it should be one of Alfred's built-in actions.

Right.  What we want is not the last command, but the result of the last command, whatever that may be.

Another example: As in Alfred, you can use QS to quickly perform calculations.  But in QS, when I activate it again, the result of the last operation, i.e. the output of the calculation, is selected by default.  Thus, I can perform further calculations with the output.  In Alfred, ↑ recalls the last calculation, not its output.  That is fine, but it starts to get hairy as your calculation gets longer and more complex.  Now, this is just a simple example, and it is easy to get around this limitation, as you can simply paste the output value that Alfred copied to the clipboard.  But it demonstrates the power of the concept of being able to select as input to Alfred whatever was the output of the last command.  It allows you to quickly chain commands.

Thanks for the tip.

Rather than starting a new thread I decided to add my questions about things I'm missing here:

Is there any way to specify a program and then reveal it in the finder instead of launching it?

Is there anyway to chose an app and then drag a file onto the alfred window so it's opened in that App?

Finally can I get Alfred to open a person in the contacts application instead of displaying them in the alfred interface?

1. Yes, just press ⌘ + ↩ instead of just ↩

2. Not that i know, but you can choose a file and then press a button like "Ctrl" and get to the actions section. There you can either choose

"open with" or you can create your own actions to open it with your desired application.

The button to enter Actions can be set under Alfred preferences → Features → File Search → Actions

3. Yes, search for the person and when shown just press ⌘ + O
