Google prevents text expansion

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was using text expansion in Chrome for like 2 years or so. It's my most used feature and so I was shocked to see this particular feature was no longer working.

Alfred told me (on the snippets tab):

"Google Chrome seems to be preventing text expansion by locking secure entry"

I was then following the trouble shooting page:

https://www.alfredapp.com/help/troubleshooting/snippets/

I made sure it's enabled in "Privacy" and logged out and on again. No help. I am also using the latest alfred.

Also, when I close Chrome and use Firefox (Alfred being restarted) it does not work. In this case it tells me process 1488 is blocking the expansion. Doing "ps ax | grep 1488" does not show a process with this number.

Anything else I can do? I am in desperate need!

Thanks,

Christian

Chrome gets confused sometimes and doesn't turn off secure input. It has been this way for several years. The only solution is to reboot, as the process that enabled secure input is no longer around to disable it again.

Thank you, but unfortunately rebooting didn't help.

What do you have open in Firefox?

Hi again,

I tried a few more things now.

- Restart -> Sublime works

- Opening Firefox -> stops working

- Message: "Sublime prevents..."

I was restarting and then opening WhatsApp Desktop, which is as I assume a packaged web app. Broke.

Looks like whenever I open a browser it stops working.

What I opened for testing is either alfredforum.com or fastmail.com

AFAIK, Sublime and Alfred Preferences don't use secure input.

So basically, when you open a browser (or browser-based app), Alfred says the previous application has enabled secure input?

Do you have any other applications, like Typinator or TextExpander, which also tell you which app has enabled secure input? Do they say the same as Alfred?

Do you have any browser extensions for password management? Or password manager apps?

Perhaps @Andrew has some thoughts?
