Mission Control - Alfred does not work with?

When the screen is in mission control visual (i.e. all apps scaled down and visible in a single window) Alfred will open but fails to allow text to be typed into the app. Is this by design? If so, why? I am an avid MC user and have learnt to accept it but it would be great if it can be used. i.e. I use MC to see if an app is open and if not use Alfred to open it....or would if I could and didn't have to get out of MC visibility first.
