Kernel Panics?

Has anyone else experienced kernel panics out of nowhere after updating Alfred, in Mac 10.15.1 (19B88)?

 

I technically had one kernel panic prior to upgrading, since upgrading to Catalina, but I had THREE today since updating to 4.0.6, and I think they occurred while or shortly after interacting with Alfred. I haven't had kernel panics in YEARS up until the last two weeks.

 

Could be a total coincidence, as I use alfred nonstop, but gotta start somewhere.

I'm more and more confident now that Alfred 4.0.6 is the cause. Five panics in a row only when interacting with Alfred. I have a video but it's not that interesting. It's happening more frequently and I noticed Spotlight is indexing while it happens. Tends to happen when I try to open Alfred preferences or reveal a file. Haven't seen it happen when searching and opening a file. Gonna try to downgrade to 4.0.5 from a backup and see if it keeps happening.

After downgrading the endless panics stopped almost immediately for two hours. I just had one again with version 4.0.5 when switching apps. Again, it might be nothing but coincidences, but I did have at least one panic recently on 4.0.5, though that could have been related to Catalina. It appeared that 4.0.6 made it substantially worse since I had half a dozen more after upgrading.

 

I don't know how to read the logs, but it seems related to the GPU. Perhaps the GPU switching on in Alfred could be an issue (if it uses it)? Some apps like to turn it on and off sort of randomly. 15" 2015 MBP, so discrete graphics.

 

I'll continue observing.

Try changing your Alfred theme. In particular, try one without any transparency.

A few things of note here:

1. Alfred runs as a user level process, and doesn't install any lower level OS based extensions, so isn't even capable of creating a kernel panic. This is unless one of the macOS APIs Alfred is using is bugged or corrupted, more likely the latter as this is the first mention of this I've heard.
2. There is no underlying rendering differences between 4.0.5 and 4.0.6, so I'm certain that the behaviour difference is purely coincidental.
3. A few users have seen graphics bugs in Catalina in both the Alfred window and the macOS dropdown and popup menus (where Alfred isn't installed) based around the window blur. If you select the Alfred Classic theme (or create a custom theme and set the window blur to 0), then this will rule out the blur causing a GPU issue.
4. Have you tried running on a new user account to rule out another underlying app (which you may not even know is installed) interfering with your Mac's operation.
5. Kernel panics are unusual, but Catalina is new and notoriously buggy still. If you upgraded via an old OS, or via the macOS Beta path, there may be an underlying OS corruption or misconfiguration. Are there other quirks you are experiencing on your Mac?

All good points. I'm sharing here just to see if anyone else experiences it too, since these are notoriously hard to track down the source, and it did seem that I was able to reproduce it reasonably well a few times in a row.

 

Note that I'm a software engineer, so I'm working this problem pretty hard on my end. Good call on the standard theme–I'll give that a shot and see if it keeps happening. Entirely possible my GPU is having hardware issues and it's causing panics. I'm doing a backup clone now as well and considering trying the next OS beta... a bit risky, but can hardly be worse than nonstop panics while I work.

 

Will keep you apprised if I learn anything. Hope it's the OS and not Alfred 🙂

...and just as quickly as I sent that, I quit everything, and was toying with Alfred themes and transparency... and as soon as I engaged Alfred and it popped up... panic. It may not be the cause but it does appear to directly be the trigger after about a dozen panics.

I am also getting the same when invoking the Alfred Hotkey to start a search. I get the window, but it does not let me type and reboots. More than half a dozen times in one day only after upgrading to 10.15.1. Reset cache and Metadata; no change. Disabled Alfred (ver 4.06 [1124]), went back to spotlight and no issues for two days since. Trying the theme change...

@jspiro @Fish Have you reported the kernel panic issues to Apple? Catalina is a brand new OS with numerous quirks still, so while you both may be seeing the issue exhibited most when Alfred is running, there will be something underlying in macOS that's choking and causing the kernel panic. You might've been unlucky and a little something is corrupted in macOS, especially if you upgraded from a previous OS or the beta.

 

We take bug reports very seriously, but we also know Alfred inside out. Alfred does not run at a low enough level to cause kernel panics. Additionally, to the best of my memory (and I handle all Alfred email and Twitter user support, as well as keep a close eye on this forum), these are the only two reports we've had since Catalina's betas were released in the summer, so it's far from a widespread issue. 

 

Your best bet at this point is to raise a bug report with Apple; The earlier in the development cycle they are aware of it, the more likely action will be taken. 

 

We'll continue to monitor this thread and situation, and will update if we get any more information about this.

Yes, I've reported them multiple times. I'm not at all blaming Alfred–there's simply a useful correlation. My guess it's something with the Spotlight APIs y'all are using. I have had a bunch of instances lately where applications don't show up in Alfred even if the system is indexed (and they show up in Spotlight). They show up *eventually*, weirdly enough.

 

FWIW since I updated to 10.15.2 Beta (19C32e), I have not had one panic. THAT SAID, I also changed my theme to include no transparency, so I can only say one of those two actions helped.

I am also experiencing this issue a few times a day. I have the same system model, kernel version, and OS version as @jspiro. I will try changing to a theme with no transparency and follow up if that stops the panics. If not then I will try upgrading to 10.15.2 Beta and testing that.

 

For removing transparency from the theme, I duplicated the Alfred macOS theme and then set the color to fully opaque for:

• window
• window border
• selected result background
• search background
• search text
• selected search text background
• selected search text

Is there anything else I am missing? Or a specific theme from someone else to use? I searched on the forums but did not find anything specifically advertising being fully opaque.

@bchrobot no need to remove all transparency, just the background blur... you can do this from the little fuzzy dot icon in the top left of the theme editor.

I use Alfred to open an application a lot. And sometimes when I try to open a new app, after typing one letter, the alfred freezes and then makes the whole macbook crash. So I have to restart. Anyone having the same issue? Plus, how can I upload a crash log?

I also had at least one kernel panic per day (peak at 15) since I move to Catalina and it always happens when I'm interacting with Alfred.  It's really annoying because it's really hard not to use Alfred ^^'

@Yago Did you take a look at the thread above and follow Andrew's suggestions to choose a theme without background blur, or set the background blur of your theme to zero?

Have the same problem, kernel panic regularly happens when I open Alfred, write search query and hit enter. Then everything froze and macos restarts.

I've read the topic and understand that Alfred can't cause kernel panic by himself, but maybe it calls some os api that leads to panic.

I use MacOS 10.15.1 as well as other and macbook pro 2015. I'll try to change a theme and comeback with updates :)

My Alfred cause Macbook crash more than 4 time in one day, so frustrated.

I changed my theme to Alfred classic theme, hope it works.

I have the same issue, kernel panic several times a day with Catalina. It used to happen with Path Finder as well till recently, they fixed it. It has to do with some GPU animation on Catalina, as I understand. 

I hope you will be able to fix it soon, it's very frustrating. 

For me it happens every 2-3-4 time I call Alfred window to input something.

@SheriffCarter A solution has already been provided in the thread above to work around the Catalina bug:

 

Change your Alfred theme to one that does not use the blur; You can do this by either switching to the Alfred Classic theme, or by turning the blur to zero on your custom theme.

You can duplicate any of the default themes and remove the blur. We're keeping an eye out to establish what proportion of users are affected (it seems to be a small minority) and work out whether it's necessary to modify built-in themes
