Not showing Applications

Recommended Posts

This issue has been reported multiple times but none of the solutions mentioned in those reports worked for me.

Alfred version: Alfred 4.5 [1253]

macOS version: macOS Big Sur Version 11.4

Problem:

No Application coming up in Default Results of Alfred. Spotlight is working fine.

I have attached the screenshot and troubleshooting output for the Safari app but this is the same for almost all of my Applications.

@pasha009 can you email the output of the Diagnostics... button in Alfred's help preferences to our info@ address and I'll take a quick look at your config.

Could you let me know what you've tried? Also, are any applications showing?

Hi all!

Adding to this issue because it seemed similar but happy to open a new issue if that would be better.

I've had an ongoing issue with this as well, wherein Alfred is no longer indexing new applications. This is been happening for about a month. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that has made matters worse as it no longer shows applications it had previously indexed.

I've tried `Clear Application Cache` and `Rebuild macOS Metadata`.

I've attached the search scope in case I've done something wrong.

An example is Slack:

whereas a competing tool manages:

Any help or advice would be well received :)

Thanks,

Kevin.

@dolearning Welcome to the forum :)

Could you please pop open Alfred's preferences to the Help tab > Troubleshooting > Run Troubleshooting... and drag some of your problem files? Paste the output in your reply so that we can see whether the troubleshooting completes successfully.

As Andrew said to the user who posted earlier, please email your Diagnostics file (type "?diagnostics" into Alfred to create the file) to our info@ address (referencing this thread) as well so that I can take a look at your setup.

Cheers,
Vero

This same metadata failure is happening on any file I check. No idea what to do with that information though!

Thanks,

Kevin.

@dolearning The first steps to follow when results seem unexpected is to rebuild your Mac's metadata. It's usually because the data being provided by macOS is incorrect (even if it appears correct in the current Spotlight cache), and rebuilding ensures that all this information is refreshed by the OS.

Even if you believe you've already reindexed, please follow the steps below specifically (as it involves deleting a cache first and ensuring Terminal has suitable permissions).

  • First, please pop open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access and add Terminal
  • Once you've done this, go to Alfred's Advanced preferences, choose "Rebuild macOS Metadata"
  • Ensure that you check "Delete .Spotlight-V100 before reindex"
  • Follow the steps in Terminal, and keep a close eye for any error messages relating to your index.

Please let me know if there are any errors. Otherwise, if it proceeds smoothly, you may need to wait up to an hour for the reindex to complete. Once this is done, make your searches again and see if your results are more as expected.

If your issue persists, please provide the following information:

  • Your diagnostics file, by typing ?diagnostics into Alfred and attaching the resulting file (please email this to our info@ address)
  • Examples of the File Troubleshooting reports for files you cannot find using Alfred (not just your user directory)

Cheers,

Vero

Hi,

This is getting more frustrating - I've noticed that Spotlight is now not indexing the correct files either.

- I've tried reindexing following the steps you laid out, followed the progress with Spotlight and then waited for it to complete. After it had completed most of my files aren't available in Spotlight or Alfred.

- I've tried running mdutil manually to get the index.

- I've tried adding folders to the Privacy tab in Spotlight and then removing them again to try to trigger a reindex of a particular folder

I'll email the diagnostics as requested above.

Thanks,

Kevin.
