@Vero

That worked!

See my screenshot of my find and the output from the troubleshoot on the same file that I posted about last.

Thank you to those who've been able to give us additional information so far.

We've put a new Alfred 5.0.4 b2093 out a few moments ago, which includes an easier way to reset your Search Scope to a pre-defined scope.

image.png

For users where Alfred's Default search scope isn't returning the expected files, please click the "Reset..." button in Features > Default Results and select "Reset to Applications and Home".

If this doesn't work, try the "Reset to Full Disk" scope.

@AllanN Could you please set your scope to "Reset to Applications and Home" and let me know whether you're seeing the results you expect? Thanks for your help! :)

@Vero with the new version, after moving the Dropbox files, the standard search scope does NOT find them, the "Reset to Apps and Home" DOES find them

Thanks for following up - not sure if other users will know where to look when they lose their files, but at least you are providing an easy fix

Appreciate the help and speed of reactivity

@Vero Updated to 5.0.4 [20930].

With Alfred Reset to either Full Disk or Application and Home, I can find files within Dropbox.

With Alfred Reset to Alfred Defaults, I CANNOT find files within Dropbox.

@AllanN Thanks for sharing your results!

Could you please do the following:

  1. Navigate to Alfred's Preferences > Features > Default Results
  2. In the Search Scope section, uncheck macOS Applications and Folder in Home
  3. Clear out your search scope (you can do this by selecting them all, then using backspace)
  4. Drag in your MacintoshHD so that you see / as the only item in your search scope

This is what your search scope should now look like:

search-scope-all.png

Then try to find some files in the usual way in Dropbox, and let me know how you get on :)

Yippieh!
It works!

Thanks a lot

Shall I check again macOS Applications folder and Folder in Home or leave it unchecked?

Hi Vero,

I am on macOS Monterey 12.6.4 (21G526) (14" M1 MBP) and Alfred 5.0.6 (2110) and with the new dropbox location...

Unfortunately, I am only able to get dropbox result when selecting the "Reset to Full disk" option. When selecting the "Reset to Alfred Defaults" dropbox results do not show...

I have tried all the troubleshooting steps by searching the forums (metadata rebuild, etc).

Yes, I am happy I get result with "Full Disk" but do not want to keep it on full disk or give Alfred full disk access. Is this just a bug with Monterey? Any ides?

I appreciate your time and support.

This isn't giving Alfred any further disk access than usual, you're simply telling Alfred to use / as your search scope rather than a more refined scope. This mirrors more closely what Spotlight does (as Spotlight isn't very selective in what it presents, it just searches *everything* indexed)

Yes, this is a macOS bug, not specific to Monterey, also affects the newer Ventura. It particularly seems to affect users who have migrated their Mac using the macOS Migration Assistant or a Time Machine from a Mac configuration where files were in the "old" locations and are now in a new location. Something in the underlying macOS structure isn't reflecting this correctly, resulting in the metadata not returning results when it should. Setting the scope to / (aka Full Disk scope) works around that macOS issue.

You may find in a future update of macOS, paths resolve themselves and you can return to the narrower search scope, otherwise when you next fresh-install macOS without migrating, you'll likely find the issue disappears completely.

Hope this is helpful insight - but in short, nothing to worry about in using Full Disk as your scope :)

Cheers,
Vero
