timurray2000
I'm a new user, just purchased and installed today. Alfred can't find Calendar, Calculator, Clock, Contacts, FaceTime, Notes, etc. None of the standard, installed, default, MacOS apps. It does find all the other apps that I've installed that are in the same folder Macintosh HD --> Applications. Spotlight can find all of these apps. It's also finding apps that I don't want it to find. These are in my ~\Applications (Parallels) folder. Any way to remove them from Alfred? Link to comment
Vero
@timurray2000 Welcome to the forum Sounds like you might need to rebuild your Mac's index if apps aren't being correctly returned (even if they appear in Spotlight). Take a look at the indexing troubleshooting page for all the details (step 5 shows you how to rebuild the index): https://www.alfredapp.com/help/troubleshooting/indexing/ With regards to excluding apps from Parallels, there may be a way to tell Parallels not to make proxy apps, which would be the best way. Alternatively, you can drag the Parallels apps folder to the Spotlight Privacy tab. You can then type "reload" into Alfred to refresh the app cache. Let me know how you get on. Link to comment

Vero
@timurray2000 Interesting, there have been a couple of people reporting this indexing issue, and we've been able to replicate it on one of our testing Macs, so we'll be investigating. I've edited my reply below to clarify the order of operations: 1. Delete the Spotlight-V100 file located here, which is equivalent to checking the "Delete Spotlight-V100" box during the standard reindex: /System/Volumes/Data/.Spotlight-V100 2. Next, open Terminal manually and paste in the following: sudo mdutil -E -i on / Let me know how you get on. Link to comment
timurray2000
Got an error on pasting the command. And I get the same error as before when I don't check the "Delete .Spotlight" box. Link to comment

Another symptom is that I have to add file types of applications such as Pages, Keynote, Affinity Designer before it can find any of those files. Link to comment
Vero
@timurray2000 Could you please use Alfred's File Troubleshooter and drag a few files in? I'd be very interested in seeing what the metadata for your files looks like. Here's how you can do this: https://www.alfredapp.com/help/troubleshooting/indexing/ "Unknown indexing state" indicates that there's something wrong with the underlying macOS index. Have you tried restarting your Mac and following the steps I'd provided again? Link to comment

Vero
@timurray2000 As suspected, the index on your Mac is corrupted and files aren't being correctly indexed by macOS. To be clear, this is an issue with the OS and not with Alfred. If you try restarting your Mac then attempt to rebuild the index again, do you still see the unknown indexing state error? timurray2000
I have reindexed multiple times using different methods. Nothing has worked. I'm trying this method again: https://matthewcassinelli.com/how-to-fix-recents-finder-macos-ventura-spotlight-index-terminal/ I have not rebooted since installing Alfred but I will do that after the current reindexing is complete. It takes a few hours. On my MacBook Pro M1, I haven't had any of these problems. What about the strange permissions error I get when I click "Rebuild MacOS Metadata"? This happens when I click "Rebuild" regardless of whether the check box is checked. Link to comment
timurray2000
After multiple rebuilds and reboot, this seems to have mostly corrected itself. I still have to add Keynote, Pages, Numbers file types to the config or it won't find any of those. Link to comment

timurray2000
I removed the "user-defined file types" of Pages, Keynote, Numbers. I can find most Pages files but not this one. It's located in the same folder as others which I can find. It won't find it if I just type <hotkey>Prayer or if I type <hotkey><space>prayer I also attached the output of "Binder Backing" because it does find that file. If I add the Pages file type back to the config. I can find <hotkey>Prayer But I can't find <hotkey><space>Prayer Keynote Files - not currently in "user-defined" It finds them as <hotkey><space> but not just with <hotkey> Makes no sense to me. Have you tried restarting your Mac and following the steps I'd provided again? Hello! I found this thread while researching what I believe is a very similar, if not the same, issue. I'm running MacOS 13.0, on a 13-inch 2020 MacBook Pro. I've attached a screenshot of my preferences window. - If I search for: Messages, Calendar, Clock, Notes, Reminders, Contacts, nothing is returned. - If I search for: Safari, Spotify, Firefox, and basically every other application I've installed (including while this problem was on going, specifically MuseScore 3 and 4), they are returned. At first I thought it might be isolated to built-in applications, but Safari coming back dampens my theory on that one. I tried rebuilding the index, watched the progress bar through Spotlight and made sure if finished. Reloaded the Alfred Cache using `reload`. I have not restarted as I am in a meeting, but I will as soon as I get the chance. I have not been able to find Alfred's File Troublehshooter you mentioned, which gives back a detailed report on specific files. I would like to do this myself with a few things to see if I have similar errors. Link to comment

Vero
@jherbert Looks like you've gone vintage You can uninstall the classic Alfred from the App Store (which doesn't contain the file troubleshooter), and re-download Alfred 5 from https://www.alfredapp.com so that you can take advantage of the most current features. If you could also please send your Diagnostics (which you can get by typing "?diagnostics" into Alfred) by email to our info@ address, I'll be able to take a look more closely at your configuration. Please link back to this thread for context Link to comment

Please link back to this thread for context I just found this file which I access at least once a week. Alfred didn't know anything about it. Ran Troubleshooter. Now it can find it and it's listed as the last item in the list when I search for "donations". Here's the output: Starting Diagnostics... Vero
@timurray2000 What are you typing when searching for this file? As you haven't sent your Diagnostics file, I can only guess your configuration, so here are a few pointers: 1. By default, you will need to prefix your search term with "open" (or press the spacebar as a shortcut) before searching for a Numbers document. 2. Your data is in iCloud according to the file path, so you'll need to ensure that Optimised Storage is disabled on your Mac to ensure that the files are stored locally and available for search. You can find this in your System Preferences > Apple ID. Link to comment

I've opened this file that way many many times, then...it's just gone. Then I run the troubleshooter on it and it finds it again. Optimize storage is turned off. I emailed the diagnostics file to you yesterday. I didn't know what you mean by "type ?diagnostics" so I went to the Help screen and found it in the lower right corner, exported it, emailed it. Donations is found now because I did the troubleshooting on it. That always make it "findable." Now it's a different file - Prayer Journal - a Pages file. I've attached various searches. If I just type "pray" it finds it. If I type "prayer" it doesn't. Then you'll see the other attempts. Maybe I just don't know how to use Alfred? I came from Launchbar where you just type a file name, or part of a file name and if you scroll down and select a file it remembers what you typed for that file. I'm just getting inconsistent results with Alfred. It finds it today and doesn't tomorrow. Link to comment
