Pretty paths for non-root volumes

Currently, if you’ve got a file “file.txt” at the root of volume “example”, its path is reported as follows:

  • By Finder, with icons: example/file.txt
  • By Terminal: /Volumes/example/files.txt
  • By Alfred results: /System/Volumes/Data/Volumes/example/file.txt

I’m sure there’s a reason for what Alfred’s doing, but it makes path displays quite a bit less readable, and it’s weird for people who don’t know macOS implementation details. I’d love a display like Finder’s, but would also be ok with a display like Terminal’s.

(I’m on 4.8 [1312], apologies if this is already reworked in 5.)
