ionstorm Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 This isn't necessarily related to Alfred, although I'm happy to try if there's an Alfred plugin for it or any other novel approach that might address my use case. I'm looking for a universal search that can search through all open windows AND open browser tabs AND browser bookmarks will switch to window or tab if it is currently open. will open it if nothing's open. I've found apps or plugins that does one or the other but never all of the above at the same time. The reason i'm looking for something like this is primarily driven by my use of 5 browser profiles at the same time as I interact with multiple tenants of the same app so. Separate browser profiles are the only way to stay logged in to all of the tenants. At the same time, I'd like to be able to search through Windows and Bookmarks all in the same search so I don't have to remember if the window or app was opened to begin with thereby reducing steps by not having to backtrack. It's probably a big ask, but I didn't know a better place to ask than a bunch of Alfred power users. 😄 P.S. coming to think of it, I wouldn't mind that search being populated in my main Alfred search... 🤔
vitor Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 That is doable. There are ways to get bookmarks and there are ways to get tabs (Automation Tasks do that for you) so it’s a matter of combining all results. However, you’ll need to be more specific because every browser stores bookmarks in different locations in different ways and requires different commands to retrieve open tabs. Additionally, guaranteeing a switch to the specific tab could be a bit of trouble. Some browsers, like Safari, are generally decent at switching to the current tab when trying to open the same URL, but others maybe not so much, and trying to go to the current tab, especially if it’s in a window on a different desktop could be tricky. All in all it’s not a gigantic ask in terms of complexity, especially if you’re willing to make small concessions, but it will take some time and effort. Also, if you’re on Firefox you can pretty much forget it, unfortunately. 7 hours ago, ionstorm said: P.S. coming to think of it, I wouldn't mind that search being populated in my main Alfred search... In theory, but in practice you probably might come to mind it. For one, you’d get so many results that they would drown everything else and it would be hard to get what you want. Then getting that information is slow. We’re not talking slow as molasses, but enough that you’d notice and it would be annoying every time, not to mention be more resource and energy intensive.
