Snippets not expanding after import from Alfred 4 to 5

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I imported my snippets from Alfred 4 to 5.5. I've checked the accessibility setting in the General tab, and the permissions are all set for Alfred, but my snippets don't expand. The Automatically Expand Snippets by Keyword is also checked on Alfred.

How did you do that? E.g., were you using Apple's migration assistant on tranfserring items to a new Mac or did you simply do it on the upgrade of Alfred? What version of macOS are you using?

If you open TextEdit and try to paste a Snipper there does that work?

@Vimal Could you please provide more details about what's not working with snippets?

- Have you checked that Accessibility specifically is granted to Alfred? Could you try removing and re-adding Alfred to ensure macOS is "nudged" into seeing that you've granted it?
- If you launch TextEdit (a simple and native app, ideal for testing) and try to expand your snippet, what do you see? Does the keyword disappear, does the snippet content appear, do you hear an error beep?
- If your snippet expands in TextEdit, in which apps do you see a different behaviour?
- What is your snippet keyword? What is the content that should be pasted?

The more information you provide, the easier it'll be for us to help troubleshoot what's happening on your Mac :)

I exported the snippet collection from Alfred 4. (Right clicking on the collection gives you the option to export). After installing Alfred 5 on my new Mac, I imported the collection into Alfred 5. I'm on Mac Sequoia 15.1.1. Just tried snippets on TextEdit and they don't work. (They still work on my old MacBook Pro running Alfred 4, which is still on Big Sur)

@Vero, here are the details:

- I have granted Accessibility to Alfred - see screenshot attached. I will try removing Alfred and adding it back and get back to you. I have restarted though (after the accessibility change) and it doesn't work

- When I try it on TextEdit, same problem, the snippet doesn't expand, instead it just shows the keyword. The keyword doesn't disappear, no beep either. For eg., /m should expand to my mobile number, but TextEdit just shows /m whereas on my older Mac running Alfred 4, it expands to my mobile number

- The behaviour is the same across all apps, the snippets don't expand with Alfred 5

- All my snippet keywords have a forward slash to start with. For example, /m should expand to my mobile, /a1 should expand to the first line of my address. All these work perfectly fine on my older Mac running Alfred 4 on Big Sur

- Happy to provide more info including screenshots of the Alfred settings if needed?

@Vimal Based on the behaviour you're seeing, I still feel that permissions may not be correctly granted on your Mac. It's possible that they appear to be granted, and you've done everything correctly, but macOS in the background hasn't caught on.

Could you please run the Terminal command in this troubleshooting guide, then follow the steps to re-grant permissions?

https://www.alfredapp.com/help/getting-started/permissions/#regrant

Let me know how you get on :)

@Vero - I followed those steps, opened terminal and ran the command to forget the permissions I'd previously granted (tccutil reset All com.runningwithcrayons.Alfred).

I then regranted permissions, see screenshot below. I even restarted the machine. TextEdit just shows the keyword, without expanding.

I stil haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling Alfred - I'll try that next.

@Vimal Reinstalling Alfred will have no impact on this, as it doesn't change the state of the preferences or macOS permissions.

Could you please provide your Diagnostics file, which you can get by typing "?diagnostics" into Alfred? You can then email them to our info@ address so that I can take a look at your preferences :)

@Vimal Thanks for sending your Diagnostics.

I can see from this that the snippets in your collection aren't set to auto-expand.

Open your preferences to Features > Snippets and select your collection.

Click in the right box that contains all of your snippets, use Cmd + A to select all, and right-click > Auto-Expansion > Set Allowed.

Once you see the column of checkboxes filled with the checkmark, your snippets will be set to expand. It's likely that when importing, you left the default checkbox that strips auto-expansion:
