Keyboard modifier to open a new window for an application

I use Spaces heavily, and I'm always wanting to open a (new) window for an application (browser, terminal, whatever).  I fantasize about having a keyboard modifier for doing this, e.g.: option-spacebar "firefox" ctrl-cmd-return.  I hate being zapped into another space where a window for the app is running, and I hate having to mouse to the dock, ctrl-click, and choose New Window.
