adding Startpage as search engine

Perhaps I have misunderstood custom searches but I have not been able to add Startpage as a search engine at Preferences > Features > Web Search using the Startpage query string. Suggestions gratefully received. Ref.: <https://www.startpage.com/>

Custom searches are used to quickly perform a query on site using Alfred. For instance, the default Google search provided in Alfred, using the 'google' keyword could be replicated by creating a custom search, setting the keyword, and using the url, http://google.com/#q={query}. Then, in Alfred, if you type your keyword and then enter text after, that, then the custom url is opened with {query} being replaced by the text you entered. So, example, if I typed 'google david ferguson' in Alfred, it would open http://google.com/#q=david+ferguson in my browser.

 

For your search, StartPage didn't provide super simple access to see the url that would be used because it used a form post, not a get. If you examined the code though, you would see that it is just a field called 'query'. So you would create your custom search using the url.. https://startpage.com/do/search?query={query}. If you set your keyword to 'sp' then you could type 'sp david ferguson' to search startpage.com for my name. If you wanted to use StartPage as a fallback search (like Google is now) then you could do that with a simple workflow. If you want to set that up instead, let me know and I would be glad to help.

If you want to create a custom search, go to Features > Web search and add a custom search. For more details on creating a custom search, take a look at this tutorial:

Under "Search URL" put:  https://startpage.com/do/search?language=english&query={query}

Under "Title":  Search Startpage for '{query}'

Under "Keyword": sp

When following these exact instructions I do not get a SAVE button (it's there but inactive).  I've filled in every field with what appears to be valid entries.  Please advise.

So you’ve added {query} to the URL?

If you want your own customization to take effect, you can add the "prfe" parameter to the end of the search URL.
