Web Search with Browser Option

Recommended Posts

I find it useful once in a while since I use more than one browser to be able to have a Web Search that allows you to set which browser will be used instead of the default browser.  I primarily add custom searches as an easy method to access a URLs that I use frequently.  I use this instead of bookmarks because I find it more convenient for my most visited sites but sometimes need to use my non default browser.

You can do this already with an Open URL action in a workflow.

Create a new blank workflow, then using the plus sign in the upper right > Actions > Open URL

I am aware of this just figure it would be a lot easier than having to create a new workflow entry for every web search and since I have quite a lot of them.

You can create a workflow for each browser you want to use, which is more efficient than creating one for every web search.

Here's the one I use for Chrome:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5818788/Alfred/Open%20URL%20in%20Chrome.alfredworkflow

It allows me to type "chrome" followed by the URL (usually pasted from my clipboard, complete with http://) I want to launch. You could set up the same thing for any other browser you want to use. :)

You could even make it fancier by changing the title to "Open {query} in Chrome", in which case it'll show you "Open http://alfredapp.com in Chrome"

I second that feature request. Three reasons:

1. While Alfred recognises URLs when you just open them in the default browser, it does not do that, when you use a custom workflow, so you always have to type "http://"

2. The built in feature does autocomplete, based on the URL cache

3. I always start typing the URL and then it comes to my mind that I would better use a different browser for that specific address. So it would be nice if we could use it similar to the file interface. Typing return would just open it in the default browser, while cursor right gives me a list of the installed browsers and preferable their incognito modes to chose from. In a perfect world Alfred would also not cache the address, if I select a browser's incognito mode.
