Can't add files to the Buffer file.

Recommended Posts

1°) What was I doing when the issue happened?

- Was trying to add .rar files to Alfred's Buffer on my Mac Mini. Failed.

- Tried the same action on my MacBook. Succeded.

- Tried to do the same action with .txt files on my Mac Mini. Failed.

- Checked Alfred's Buffer settings. Everything looks normal.

- Closed and relaunched Alfred. Still failed at adding .rar files to the Buffer.

No keyboard shortcut conflict involved.

2°) Was I able to replicate the test ? Yes. 4 times.

3°) Alfred version : Alfred 2 v2.6 (374) (on both Macs)

4°) OS X version: OS X Yosemite (on both Macs)

Could you check if the file buffer is enabled in Alfred's Features > File Search > Buffer prefs?

Cheers,

Andrew

Yes it is checked. I tried the uncheck/recheck. Still not working.

Rebooting the mac didn't help either.

Do you have any other apps which may be interfering with the keyboard combo on the Mac it's not working on? If you aren't sure, temporarily creating a new user account, switching to that user, (activating the Powerpack), then trying there as a fresh user.

Long story short. I made it work. Sort of.

I followed your instructions. Everything was working fine on my second account.

Back in my default account, deleted all the login items. None of my login items add a Alt+UpArrow key assigned as a keyboard shortcut. But you never know.

Restarted my Mac. I can now use the Buffer file BUT only when I use my external keyboard NOT when I use the keyboard of my MacBook connected to my mac mini via Synergy (wifi).

I can assign this keyboard shortcut to an Alfred workflow from any keyboard (external/MacBook) on my Mac Mini.

I can assign this keyboard shortcut to an Alfred workflow on my MacBook.

I can assign this keyboard shortcut to anything in the Apple System Preferences.

Apparently, it is not a question of keyboard shortcut conflict.

I checked I didn't modify the default setting of Alt in the Modifier Keys pane.

This is really weird.

It would have been helpful to mention your unusual keyboard setup in your first post :) As the File Buffer works as expected for you when using a standard keyboard and it's a stable feature that hasn't changed in many Alfred releases, the only variable that changes when you're seeing the File Buffer issue is the use of a remote keyboard via Synergy.

It will almost certainly be the source of your issues and, as this is outside of Alfred's control, it's not something that can be fixed on our side as Synergy is most likely messing with the hotkeys.

Cheers,

Vero

@vero I didn't mentionned my particular setting in my first post because it had been working during weeks  :)

To any user who has a similar problem: While I am not 100% sure the problem comes from Synergy, it is 99% sure it does.

Synergy messes up with keyboard shortcuts. For example: I could set up keyboard shortcuts in Synergy but they just didn't work at all.

I tried another solution teleportd.  I had been using teleportd before using Synergy. Worked fine with Alfred.

Just retried it this morning. I only can toggle Alfred in my MackBook (the server) not my Mac Mini (the client).

So, if I were you I would stick to Synergy.

While using a keyboard through Synergy I can't manipulate (add, remove, etc...) files to the alfred buffer. Is there a known workaround or planned fix? The buffer works with the Macbook Pro's (new 16" w/Catalina) built-in keyboard.

For those unfamiliar Synergy allows a user to share a keyboard and mouse across multiple computers.

In my case this is a Win10 server going to the Mac client (where Alfred resides).

Thanks

@BigLaser Alfred isn't doing anything special to interpret the key combos for using the buffer, so there isn't anything which can be "fixed" per-se in Alfred.

Have you reached out to Synergy to ask them if there is any configuration you can change to allow the key combos to work?

Cheers,

Andrew

I haven't because the Alt/Option input works well for every other application, including Alfred, except for Alfred's buffer input.

No other thoughts on this?

Through Synergy, using Alt for the Alfred hotkey works, but using Alt for manipulating the Alfred buffer does not. Leads me to believe that Synergy is not the culprit.

@BigLaser Alt may not be the issue, the combination of Alt + up may be reserved or consumed by Synergy.

Have you tried switching the Features > File Search > Buffer > Compatibility to using shift+alt in place of alt? This may work around the issue.
