Alfred Not finding files on my computer

Recommended Posts

Alfred is not finding files inside my documents folder.

I've followed the directions in help to go through the settings of alfred in where it looks for files.

I've check all the settings in mac spotlight preferences and they match your suggestions.

I've tried recreating the index for meta per your suggestions

nothing worked and it's stil not finding files in my documents folder. seems crazy. especially because it can find files in an attached external hard drive

then as a test i added the doc to my desktop.

it doesnt find that on my desktop either.

something is clearly not right.

Ideas on troubleshooting further?

Alfred is not finding files inside my documents folder.

Hi Craig,

A few questions below that should help troubleshoot the issue :)

- Could you let me know what file type you're searching for and exactly what you're typing into Alfred to find it?

- Can Alfred find any files on your Mac when typing "open" followed by a search term?

- Can it find files in your Documents folder but not others?

Please try with more than one file to check that the issue isn't with a particular file.

In Alfred's preferences, under Features > Default Results, make sure that the checkbox for "Include folders in Home" is ticked in the bottom right, as this includes your Documents folder.

I'm sure it's something simple, so let me know the details above and I'll help you further :)

Cheers,

Vero

sure, here's what I'm doing.

The file is a jpg titled 1715 fleet - golden glove.jpg

located in downloads and now desktop too

i use a hotkey to open alfred - in my case option + spacebar

alfred window comes up

I type several different things - none of which work:

  • golden glove
  • find: golden glove
  • find golden glove
  • space golden glove
  • 1715 fleet golden glove
  • 1715 fleet - golden glove
  • open golden glove

none of these things work.

Include folders in home is checked.

it does not find this file.

can it find other files in downloads folder - yes.

can it find other files in desktop - yes.

does the file actually exist and is it not a fiction of my imagination. yes it exists. I'm not imagining it.

Thanks for your help.

Let me know if there's anything else you can think of.

Link to comment

sure i can do that. I'll report back.

But that begs the question - how many other files might be missing and how many would I need to do this for?

Doesn't that kind of eliminate the usefulness of the tool if I have to go this far to make files findable?

This is a diagnostics tool which may help us identify what is happening on your Mac. By dragging in a file which Alfred can't find (golden glove), it will let us know if there is anything broken in the metadata or if the metadata is complete. If it's complete, then the issue lies somewhere in Alfred's configuration. If it's broken, the issue lies in OS X...

It just helps us troubleshoot your issue really :)

Just read the previous note.

Here's the info:

The info looks relatively complete, so the file should be found normally - so there are a couple of other things we can check in your Alfred preferences.

However, I note that one question we didn't look at is whether Spotlight can find the file on your Mac? This will also provide some insight on where the issue is. :)

@Jason Lau Have you had a look at the link I provided in my previous reply? Based on your reply and diagnostics, it seems likely that you're encountering a known issue with the macOS Monterey Migration Assistant. The issue and workaround are outlined here:
https://www.alfredapp.com/help/troubleshooting/indexing/monterey/

Let me know how you get on after following step 2 and widening your search scope.

Cheers,
Vero
