ShortFilms — Stream from a selection of short films

Recommended Posts

Stream from a selection of short films, powered by Short of the Week.

Run shorts and it’ll download and show a list of the latest films. Pick one and it’ll start streaming. Alternatively, use ⌘ to download the video (requires DownVid and will automatically add to WatchList if available), ⌥ to see its synopsis, or ⌃ to copy the short’s link to the clipboard.

Short of the Week publishes a new short every day and building the initial list takes a few seconds, so after the initial download the list is cached for one day. If you want the list ready at all times without having to wait, run :shortfilmslaunchd to install (or later remove, running the same command) a launchd service to seamlessly update the list every day close to the time Short of the Week updates their website.

Streaming is done with either mpv or vlc, depending on what you have (mpv takes precedence).

Updated to use the most recent version of OneUpdater.

Just wanted to thank you for making this, great idea on making it load in the VLC player too makes it really non-intrusive.

If you’re installing the launchd service, it now by default runs close to the time Short of the Week updates their website daily (seems to be about 2PM UTC). To take advantage of this, uninstall and reinstall again with :shortfilmslaunchd.

:shortfilmslaunchd now also detects if the lauchd service is in place and only shows Install or Uninstall appropriately.

Like it! Would be cool to avoid to list already watched shorts from the list:)

Removing watched videos means there will also have to be away to get those back. That’ll add complexity to the workflow itself and its interface, and I don't take added complexity lightly.

Since the list is updated everyday, meaning a new video is added and the oldest removed, it only makes sense to keep track of watched shorts if you watch them frequently (a bunch in a row or one everyday), and if you do that there isn't much to be gained by removing watched ones — not enough to justify the extra complexity.

Better handling of setting renew time in launchd agent. There’s also a new option to reinstall the agent, to account for when daylight savings messes up the time.

You now use ⌃ to copy the video link to the clipboard. ⌘ now downloads the video with DownVid and adds it to WatchList (if available). With this option, Alfred’s window won’t close (so you can quickly download a bunch in a row).

_sharedresources will also only act if you use mpv, not vlc.

When downloading videos, detect if DownVid is missing and warn you (with an option to download it) if it isn’t.

The feature is already live, but doesn’t work as of yet. It will in the next release of Alfred.
