Screen Sharing with automatic network discovery

Recommended Posts

Hi, Thanks for posting you're workflow.

I'm having the same problem as the #2 reply.

Keep getting connection failed to my wife's Mac.

It's listed in the results "Christines iMac.local"

I take out space and add dash..."Christines-iMac.local" I can connect fine.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks so much for the help.

This is fixed in the latest version. Just use the download link from the first post again.

Make sure that you're having the latest version. Just use the download link in the first post.

If this doesn't help, please open Terminal.app, run the following command and post the output here.

hostname && dns-sd -B _rfb._tcp

Thanks, the latest version solves the multi-entry problem I described. When I run the terminal command, I get several entries for my local machine, which is what I was originally seeing with your workflow, but not any more.

Regards

Glenn.

First of all: awesome workflow!

I have my iMac connected via ethernet and WiFi to the same network and I get duplicate entries. Is it possible to prevent that from happening, without turning off one of the connections?

I love this workflow, and use it all the time.  I'm having the repeating entry problem (i'll post my results below) but more pressingly, since upgrading to mavericks (not sure if it's mavericks related, or just coincidence) The first time i activate the workflow, it doesn't show the remote computer.  In fact I have to open a finder window, which shows that computer on the sidebar, and then the workflow will work correctly.

Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks!

Ted

and here is my terminal response re: repeating entry:

I also see entries for local and back to my mac. is it possible to edit that? or only see BTMM if i'm not on the same local network?

air is the local computer, imacly is the remote:

Timestamp     A/R    Flags  if Domain               Service Type         Instance Name

12:14:09.418  Add        3   0 38303090.members.btmm.icloud.com. _rfb._tcp.           Air

12:14:09.418  Add        3   4 local.               _rfb._tcp.           Air

12:14:09.418  Add        2   4 local.               _rfb._tcp.           iMacly

Hi Ted,

thanks for your reply. I experienced the same issue with Mavericks. Sometimes I don't see results after booting OS X, sometimes I see only some of them. It also takes some time for the BTMM machines to show up.

There's currently no fix for that - it's the way the DNS service works - but you can run the workflow a second time and you should get all results.

Regarding your second question:

- What exactly do you see in Alfred?

- On which machine did you run dns-sd to get the results you posted?

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the reply.

I ran dns-sd on "air" and in alfred I see this:

Screen%20Shot%202013-11-05%20at%207.00.3

i used to see the BTMM for iMacly as well, but am currently not (maybe Mavericks?)

thanks for the help!

Ted

Hmmmm...

looks like it was "Air-2.local"

guess that explains it.  I changed it, and now air.local no longer shows up.

I can't hide BTMM now, can I?

Thanks!

BTMM enabled Mac's will still show up in the list if it's not the same machine that you're using at the moment.

You're welcome.

Hm,

I'm not seeing BTMM for imacly, just the .local one.

EDIT:

sorry, iMac had just come back from repairs and BTMM was not enabled.  All is working now.

After the recent update I still see my BTMM machine which is in a different network.

I assume that your iMac will show up with BTMM under the same circumstances.

You could run a quick test using your mobile phone as a hotspot and let me know if there are any problems.

Cheers,

Patrick

Is there any way to check that my computer is being broadcasted publicly?

The Terminal command lists the server but Alfred fails to list it upon typing 'vnc'

Quick question - once the workflow is downloaded, is it supposed to be a double-click and go mechanism, or do I need to modify the name of the workflow to have it function in Automator?

The computer you're currently using is excluded from the list as it does not make sense to start a screen sharing session to the same machine.
