By default, Alfred searches based on capital letters to make things much more accurate in the results. You have two options...

 

1. If FireFox is a special case, add a spotlight comment of 'ff' to Firefox and then Alfred will find this when you type ff. This is recommended as you can keep the accuracy for all other searches.

So, I put "ff" in Firefox' comments, and it worked like a charm. Thanks.

But yesterday, I put "tb" in Tweetbot's comments, and it didn't work. I figured there may have been a cache-related delay, as you mentioned previously, so I figured I'd use it the next time. But today -- not quite 24 hours later, when I type "tb" in Alfred, it still does not list Tweetbot.

Any suggestions?

Although Alfred is friendlier and more attractive than QuickSilver, this particular QS feature's extremely useful, and I miss it in Alfred:

Upon invoking Alfred, it would be great if the most recent item automatically populated the text field. That way, the item could be reopened (or switched to) by simply hitting enter. This is especially handy if the user must repeatedly switch to other apps and back again. A huge time-saver!

It's important that the previously typed text be already selected. That way, if you don't need that item again, you just type what you do need, the text would be replaced — and Alfred would behave as if the field had been blank all along. That's what you call a "win-win situation."  :-)

As such, there's really no downside to this feature. But if there's concern that some users wouldn't want to see the previous search, this feature could be enabled in preferences.

I hope you'll consider it. So far, it's the only thing I repeatedly miss.  :-)

2. Change the App fuzzy mode to word boundaries in Alfred's Advanced preferences, then ff will match Firefox.

 

It's also worth noting that the cache may have just not caught up for your first search as Alfred will always match HereFileFile for ff

I'm happily migrating to Alfred from the old workhorse QuickSilver. Alfred is prettier and friendlier.  :-)  But I've hit a snag:

Both apps "learn" what you want after you type a few characters then select an item. I just so happened to choose Firefox as my first app search. In QuickSilver, my shortcut for years has been "ff," but in Alfred, when I type "ff," it doesn't include Firefox in the search results at all, because apparently Alfred requires a space as a delimiter -- whereas QuickSilver searched within file names (and contact names, etc.) for any possible iteration of the specified letters.

This allowed the user to create simple shortcuts to files that might have had names beginning with the same letters. So, the first time I typed "ff," QS showed a list of files whose names contained at least 2 Fs, like so:

Firefox

Fab Four

Biff Hoffman

That last example may seem unintuitive, but after you have many shortcuts, it may become necessary to have some "creative" ones. The point is, it's better to have the option.

Question:

Although it seems that by default Alfred's search is limited to words beginning with the letters typed, is it possible to make Alfred's search more "inclusive," so that (for example) typing "ff" will find "Firefox"?

UPDATE:

The first time I invoked Alfred and typed "ff," it found only one app: an app called "Fab Four." But after submitting my forum post, I tried it again, and this time it found two apps:

Fab Four

HereFileFile

Notably, "HereFileFile" does not have any spaces! So that counters my previous experience -- unless Alfred takes into account the fact that the Fs in "HereFileFile" are capitalized. But in my earlier search, "HereFileFile" was not included. So it's interesting that the results changed, the second time.

(For the record, I'm perfectly aware I can find Firefox in Alfred by typing more letters. But I'd prefer to type fewer letter, and I'm hoping there's a way to configure Alfred to do so.)  :-)
