displaying text in menu bar

I know there is a workflow that relys on a 3rd part app called One Thing to post text in the apple menu bar, and keyboard maestro also has a means of displaying text in the menu bar but is there is a way to do this via the command line? I've love to build something like this that I could trigger with Alfred. i've been searching around but haven't found anything.
