Override F14 and F15 hotkeys from their default brightness assignment in macOS?

I see a lot of discussion about this online and i've tried a few methods that haven't worked for me. The most obvious being removing them from the keyboard shortcut assignment in preferences. Has anyone else got this to successfully work?

that would be simplest way to do it. Just set them to standard f keys in the keyboard preferences.
