Trouble connecting [Resolved]

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm having trouble connecting the Alfred remote app to my macs.

I have a macbook pro (192.168.1.84) and a macbook air (192.168.1.85).

With the former I've managed to connect my iPad mini (192.168.1.65) to it *once* using direct connection after many many attempts. It doesn't want to know about my iPhone 5S (192.168.1.64) at all.

With the air I had more success. Was able to get both iDevices to connect (each thru direct connection) relatively quickly but today no luck. I've tried deleting the macs from the remote app and the iDevices from Alfreds settings and then trying again.

However have had no luck with any combo of iDevice and macbook since then. Firewalls are running on each mac but the remote worked with it in operation.

It's quite frustrating. Lots of reboots and messing about for not much end product so far. Hope you can help! You may need more info from me, happy to provide whatever I can.

Have you tried temporarily turning off the firewall?

Also, could you try quitting Alfred and creating a new user account on your Mac, switching to that user and trying from there? There may be something on your main profile which is interfering with Alfred's connection.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi!

I did try temporarily turning off the firewall but it didn't work. I also tried the new profile thing but that didn't work for me. I did manage to solve the problems I'd been having. I'll explain what I did, even it was just a peculiar coincidence, it might prove to be a useful option for others having trouble.

I did a "nuclear" version of "turning it off and turning it on again". I switched off every single wifi device in my flat, finishing with the router. I then switched them back on one by one. I obviously started with the router :)  then the mac that was causing all the trouble. After that I turned on my phone which paired to Alfred with no trouble. Then the other mac followed by my iPad. I then successfully paired the iPad to the second mac. I am keeping one remote per device for now, though I doubt that will causes a problem to have both devices act as remotes for both macs. After that the Apple TV and the PS3 went back and there've been no problems since.

By the time I resorted to switching everything off I couldn't get anything to work on AirPlay, so I think some sort of gremlin had got into the wifi set up (perhaps caused by a crash of the Apple TV earlier in the week).
