capture selected text (a la Launchbar)

I was playing around with Launchbar, and it has a nice feature where you can hold down it's shortcut to capture selected text to pass through to actions.

 

Is there a similar workflow for Alfred?

Absolutely Start your workflow with a hotkey object, and choose the argument "Selection in OS X" - you can then do what you like with it, search for it in a specific way, pass it to a workflow, etc by connecting it to the next object of your choice
