Files not found after migration

Recommended Posts

After I migrated from a MacBook to a Mac Studio Alfred does no longer find files in my home folder.

Here's the output for one file on the Desktop:

The files are accessible via Spotlight.

The files are also accessible in Alfred if I click Reset… -> Reset to Full Disk.

They are not accessible when I select Reset… -> Reset to Alfred Defaults or Reset to Applications and Home even though both files are located in the home folder.

I do not have a custom Home Folder set in the advanced File Search settings.

I can access the files if I type `~` in Alfred and navigate to Downloads or Desktop.

If I type cd ~ in a terminal, I get to /Users/dominik:

> cd ~
> pwd
/Users/dominik

What can I do?

What versions of Alfred and macOS are you using?

The reason I ask is because when I migrated to a new MacBook Pro (running Ventura) earlier in the year I had the same problem as you but it was cured:

  • initially by resetting Alfred's default search scope (as you did); but
  • subsequently by an update to Alfred (although I don't know recall which update made Alfred's default search settings again work).

For what it's worth I'm using Alfred 5.1.2 under macOS 13.5 (and Alfred's default search settings work as they should).

Edit: welcome to the forum!

Alfred 5.1.2 is pre-release (sorry, I should have mentioned that)—but that is not the version that fixed the default search settings problem for me.

I'm not sure if you've worked through all the suggestions on this Alfred help page: Troubleshooting File Indexing Issues. If you've not yet done so it would probably be worthwhile trying the suggestions.

Edit: in passing, migration created a number of problems for me—the one to which you refer among them.

This looks like an Alfred thing to me.

@Dominik Mayer Welcome to the forum :)

As @Stephen_C highlights, this is an issue caused by the macOS Migration Assistant, where paths from the previous Mac/macOS version are not correctly set on the new Mac. Using the broader scope is one workaround, but most users find this resolves after a deep reindex (Step 6 here) or over a period of time where macOS naturally rebuilds the index and likely works past the legacy paths that were migrated.
