Is there a way to search Dictionary with a hotkey?

Recommended Posts

I want to use the 'Define a Word' action from Alfred but be able to open it up and use by pressing a hotkey rather then opening Alfred and then typing my 'd' command.

Here is what I mean (http://i.imgur.com/LaYWfrK.png). I basically want to bypass typing in the 'd' in my Alfred window because I often use the dictionary and this will save me a lot of time.

Is this possible to do? If so, I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you.

I would recommend switching your keyword back to "define" and creating the workflow below for quick and noise-less access to the Dictionary.

Create a simple workflow with a single Trigger > Hotkey object as follows:

- Pick a hotkey that suits you

- Set action to "Show Alfred"

- Set the argument to Text and the text to "define[space]" (including a space after the word "define")

This last point where I've added a space after "define" is important to make it quickest. You can then pop up Alfred using your hotkey, start typing your search term and hit enter.

Alternatively, you can add the Dictionary to your Fallback searches as shown here, as another way to quickly access the dictionary:

Thank you for your answer, Vero.

This is indeed what I want. However is there a way to remove the word 'define' in my searches? I really dislike it being there and I just want to focus on the query I will be typing. A few other applications do this when you access their searches with a hotkey. Is there a way to do it here too?

Here is an example from the 'Dash' workflow : http://i.imgur.com/8UuONTX.png

This would be feasible but would require significantly more scripting, as is the case with the very clever Dash workflow. You can shorten the "define" keyword so that it's less visible, but I'd suggest not changing it back to "d" if you want to avoid irrelevant results like folders popping up in your results too.

Cheers,

Vero
