how do i "hide" a folder from alfred?

You can drop those items in Spotlight's privacy section or you can add alfred:ignore to their Finder comment as well. Either method should hide the result from Alfred.

In Features->Web Search, the table listing shows an icon, and then the keyword for the items. These can be clicked to change the keyword for web searches.

I have been using a very useful workflow to call numbers that are displayed on my iMac. (Calling them with the iPhone.) Workflow is called Dial with Pushdialer, by Martin Kopischke. 

 

Could somebody help me (with a workflow?) to call the numbers with a voip app on my iPhone? The free app (in the app store) is called Triiing and is issued by a Belgium telecom provider, Telenet. It is used to call with the iPhone using the Telenet data subscription. (Like Skype, but you don't have to buy extra credit, since i'm using mu paid Telenet subcription.)

I"m not sure that this would be possible the way your are wanting this to happen. Does Triiing have some kind of connection back to your Mac where you can trigger a dialer from your computer?

Is there a way to do it w/o the hotkey? I never remember all the hotkeys I have set up!

You could also do it with a keyword that attaches to a Run Script. Set the Run Script to grab the value in the clipboard using pbpaste and then "open" the url with the variable in place. Does that make sense?

I've got two questions regarding the ranking of the search results:

 

( a ) Alfred learned that I searched for a term many times during the last few weeks. This makes the result appear at the top of the search results. Now the result is not relevant to me anymore. How can I teach Alfred to forget what he learned?

 

( b ) I've got some search results that I want to be ranked higher as soon as I type e.g. the first two letters. My problem is that I chose them many times but they only appear when I type the first four letters.

You could more than likely clear up both issues by clearing Alfred's knowledge. This would clear out the no longer relevant search and reset the priority of the other items that are jumping ahead in the second case. It may take a little training to get Alfred to put this items at the very top, but if you continue to type those two characters only and then select what you want, he'll eventually learn.

 

I'm using Alfred v2 on Mavericks. I would like to use it to quickly locate documentation of LaTeX packages (PDF files). I have TeXLive 2014 installed in /usr/local/texlive/2014. I added /usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/doc/latex to Alfred's search scope, but I'm not having any success. I tried searching using open and the backtick (file search) to no avail. I tried rebuilding the OSX metadata, but not joy there either. The locate command-line utility quickly finds the files in question, e.g.:

$ locate thmtools.pdf /usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/doc/latex/thmtools/thmtools.pdf

I should add that Spotlight can't find the files either. Is it a matter of permissions?

Because of the location of these files, they may not show up just by adding them to the regular search scope. Try creating a File Filter workflow instead. Set the search scope to the previously mentioned folder, and make sure that you tick the option to "Show files marked as System File". If there are only certain file types that you would like to be shown in the result, set them in the file types area. Let me know how this works out

I'm trying to create a custom search for a site which uses autocomplete (like google), but when you click one of the suggestions it doesn't have a search query link it goes straight to the page itself. 

 

Any ideas?

The autocomplete would have to be provided via an API that you had access to in order to pull this off. So, good example is, the Google Search workflow that is included with Alfred. You can send a request to a single URL and it returns autocomplete results. You parse those and then provide feedback to Alfred.

I understand you can use a script filter to display 3 results and use the selected result to pass arguments to a script afterwards.

 

Is it possible to use 3 seperate keywords to pass hard coded argument to a script directly?

 

I am trying to avoid using two steps (keyword & resulting list) to select the workflow's parameters.

If you have 3 keywords that are all the same then you will have 3 things to choose from as options also. This would be similar to a script filter except a keyword does no processing. Or, maybe I'm misunderstanding? You could also do...

1. A keyword to Applescript that would launch Alfred with another keyword and input params prefilled.

2. Keywords to external triggers that activate another script with given input.

Cmd+c will do for copy to the clipboard, but will close Alfred so now I need to Alt-Space and paste. I was looking for a more direct way.

 

And in general - is there a way to add associate actions with other things than only files/folders?

What are you having to pop Alfred back up and paste the url in? What are you doing with it? If you just want to open it, then pressing Enter on the bookmark in the search results should do that. If you're wanting to do something else, there aren't actions similar to the file actions but you could edit the workflow to allow for different actions based on a key modifier. For instance, you press enter and it opens the url. If you press Cmd+Enter it does something else.

I would like to create a workflow that is close to the 'Filter from keyword and reveal', with a limited search scope but instead of display the search results in the Alfred window, I'd like it to reveal all search results in Finder (like spotlight, but restricted to a specific folder).

 

Any advice is much appreciated.

So this would be a file filter with a limited scope, and you want to reveal them all in Finder? Would using the default Ctrl+Return hotkey on the result work? I guess I'm just trying to figure out exactly what you're wanting..

When navigating up in a file directory, and then going back into the same directory, it is always the first file in the directory which is selected. Is there a way to get back to the last selected files. So going up->up->down->down will bring me to the same file? 

No I'm afraid that Alfred isn't capable of doing that, as mentioned in the other post though, you could quickly jump back to the file you need by typing a few characters to filter back down to it

Is there a way to search within folder after navigating into it? that is, once Alfred found a folder base on my search, I'm using cmd-arrowdown (or in my case right arrow) to get the list of files in it. Now I want to search for a particular file (one time it can be an excel file, another time some name match etc).

Alfred using Cmd+Down you can begin typing again to filter them. Now, this isn't the same as performing an actual search so it wouldn't traverse multiple levels. It would simply allow you to filter what is visible within that folder. Is that what you are looking for? Also, you can use wildcards when filtering them as well so, *.xlsx would filter and show Excel files

Have you tried simply pressing Cmd+C when the item was selected?

I have kMDItemAuthors in the file filter + Title, DisplayName, UserTags, OMUserTags.  It finds artist name but not in combination with song name.  So, as explained, it will find "Chuck Berry" and "Maybelline" but not "Chuck Berry Maybelline".  I get a blank even though I have a song by "Chuck Berry" called "Maybelline"

Have you double checked the file to ensure that the metadata is actually there? I created a filter for a music directory, set the file type, the search scope and then added tje kMDItemAuthors tag and, in this case I was searching through a folder for a band called Thousand Foot Krutch, and specifically looking for a file called "We Are". Searching for "thousand foot krutch we are" returned exactly the file I was looking for.

Hmm, is there any way for Alfred to Put Displays To Sleep like you can set in Hot Corners? I'd rather have that than the screensaver.

 

Edit: going to try using Sleep. Seems like it's pretty snappy to wake up.

OSX's accessibility setting keeps getting reset? I would enable Alfred in there, but after a few hours it would be reset back to off. 

I'd wonder if that would be some kind of issue with permissions, not allow things to persist. May not be but I'd try repairing permissions

My company uses help scout (customer service site) a lot (for better or worse). I saw EngelbertHumperdinck aka AlfredFreak's Gmail workflow  and the line you can use to create a work flow for google calendar . I'm not familiar with applescript but noticed it's used. 

 

Is it possible to create a workflow in alfred to fill out web forms and if so what's the best approach? 

 

Edit: noticed there's a site called fakeapp.com that kinda does the same thing for web apps. I have a feeling Alfred can do the same but don't know how to start it X_X

Alfred could do something things like this with AppleScript. As long as it's form fields you are filling or other items that you can reliably tab through to, AppleScript should be able to help some here. Clicking items that don't have a tab index wouldn't be possible though. All this would be done by simulating keypresses and such. So for instance, you click the first field, press a hotkey or something to activate a workflow that runs Applescript to fill in that field, press tab, fill in the next, press tab, etc, etc.

Is it possible to hook Alfred shortcuts or searches to currently selected text?

 

for example I would like to high light a line of text in one of my applications and then fire up a shortcut to have it search for that term in Google.

I'm trying, without success so far, to use File Filter for searches inside json files.

 

It works well with the rest of file types I've tried so far, but when I add json to the File Types list, File Filter doesn't return anything. If I rename to "name.json.txt" one of those json files in which I'm trying to look for text and look for all kind of files instead, the filter works without problem.

 

Are there any limitations that prevent File Filter from looking inside files with .json extension?

If I had to guess, this would be because a json file, even though you and I know it's text, to Spotlight/OSX it isn't and therefore it doesn't have a kMDItemTextContent property associated with it. Same reason why you can't QuickLook json files by default

Well, there isn't a built in way to do this but the snippets are stored in a file that could be shared. The only down side of this though would be that, if they have any fo their own setup, it would overwrite those. The file is a sqlite database so, if you know how to tinker with sqlite you could get around that. Otherwise, if it's not a big deal for the user to lose their own snippets, then you could find the snippets.alfdb file where your preferences are located.. Alfred 2.alfredpreferences/clipboard/snippets.alfdb

This currently isn't possible unless you are doing custom searches with workflows as opposed to the default web search functionality.

What's the Search URL for Google "I'm Feeling Lucky"?

 

I'd like to shorten the Alfred keyword (Feature --> Web Search) from 'lucky' to just 'l' (Feeling a bit lazy/I use the feature very often, which sometimes leads to 'lukyc' or another variation of the misspelling).

You can actually, from the Web Search preferences, double click on the "lucky" keyword and edit it from there

On Yosemite, I'm having trouble with all kinds of preferences not sticking or not being able to be set.

 

- I'm not able to set my keyboard shortcut to Command-Space. I have the Spotlight keyboard shortcuts turned off (and also set to something else just in case).

- When I set the appearance to something other than the default, it reverts back after quitting and relaunching Alfred Preferences. For example, I switched the theme to OS X Yosemite Light, turned off the hat and the cog and then quit the Preferences app. When I go to preferences again, it's back to Alfred Light.

- None of my custom searches are being loaded.

 

Using v2.5.1 on Yosemite 10.0.

 

I've tried re-installing Alfred, deleting all preference, cache, and application support files, and no change.

It not saving the theme sounds like a permissions problem. Could you try repairing your disk permissions in Disk Utility? If that doesn't resolve  the issue and you currently use Alfred's syncing feature, could you try setting the sync folder to somewhere else temporarily? Perhaps within ~/Documents. Try those things and report back please
