No. ZotQuery ignored them, and I assumed there was a good reason for that. I've added URLs back to attachments, though, and I suspect the reason might just be because web pages don't have a path, which makes them trickier to handle.

The entry doesn't show at 'bill evans' but possibly there are too many entires at that point. Zothero gives me 11 before going back to the top. I would expect that behaviour.

 

I can't do anything with just a description. Please export and post the affected items, so I can see the problem for myself. There's no way I can fix something like this if I have to take a guess, upload a new build, wait for your reply, and then take another guess…

Pasting into textedit or notes (mac) gives me the codes.

 

The workflow copies multiple formats to the pasteboard. It copies RTF rich text, which should be what gets pasted in TextEdit, Word, this forum etc. It also copies HTML to the pasteboard (both as HTML and as plaintext), so HTML tags is what you should see in a text editor.

Always look in, or always paste the results?  I always think pasting these massive debugs must be annoying for people. Should I be trying to evaluate the important parts and just pasting them? As I don't know what's important and what's not, I have pasted it all. I could take some guesses at what's not important, but they would be guesses.

I don't want to use that because it requires adding 50MB of styles to the workflow, and the workflow is already big enough due to citeproc's dependency on lxml.

 

I see three options:

 

  1. Show an error message to the user that includes the solution (install parent style XXX).
  2. Download all the styles to the workflow's data directory on first run, and resolve them from there.
  3. Write my own resolver that downloads just the required parent stylesheets to the data directory.

I'd vote for #1 to begin with.  #3 would be helpful but not necessary.  Ideally with a prompt & maybe an option to put it in the Zotero styles folder instead of keeping it in the workflow.

I don't think there is a good reason that ZotQuery did that. Often if I'm researching something online, I'll be saving many many webpages straight into zotero. Their item type is web page. It's really useful to be able to search them, not even necessarily their attachments (though sure, that would be nice), but the creators and titles of web pages is very important. Is that possible?

Always look. Use best judgment in posting the results. In a case like this, for example, rather than posting the whole log of your typing in the query character by character, just post the log for the query or queries that is/are producing unexpected results.

I don't know how Zotero would react to that. As a rule, it's best not to mess with an application's data except via an official API, and I think Zotero gets along fine without the parent style.

There's not a lot of difference in terms of effort, I think. Extracting the URL of the parent stylesheet is the tricky bit. Downloading it is fairly trivial by comparison. And I think #3 would provide a much better experience.

Also -- I've realized something else as I've corrected my own misunderstanding of how CSL works.

 

It will actually be very helpful to copy either an item's CSL citation http://docs.citationstyles.org/en/1.0.1/specification.html#citation or CSL bibliography http://docs.citationstyles.org/en/1.0.1/specification.html#bibliography . 

 

I'd actually recommend, rather than having opt-return and command-return copy different styles, there could only be one active style, with opt-return copying the citation in that style and command-return copying the bibliography entry.

To be honest, I'm more interested in attracting contributors over users.

 

This is a workflow that I'm almost certainly never, ever going to use myself. I don't really see myself starting a new degree anytime soon, and I didn't read a whole lot during the last one…

 

The goal is to get to a stable base, with sensibly-structured, understandable code that other folks can further develop.

While I'm redefining all the keystroke modifiers....it would also be useful to have one that copies to the clipboard a zotero:// link back to the item.

That's how the default action works. I can put the URL in the copytext, so ⌘C copies it.

I guess I could add that (and other stuff) to the ^↩ actions.

 

Perhaps I'll build a bunch of actions and allow the user to choose which one is fired by ⌘↩, ⌥↩ etc.

Right, I think I've figured out what you mean.

 

You can't find a note you've added to an entry or updated, right?

 

Editing/adding notes currently won't cause the workflow to update its search index.

 

The problem is that it takes several seconds to index the entire Zotero database. So rather than trigger a full re-index every time the database changes, the workflow tries to be a bit smarter about it and only re-indexes modified entries and removes deleted ones.

 

Entries and attachments have a "last modified" field that the workflow can use to see what has been updated, but notes don't.

 

I'll look into forcing a full re-index in the background, so the workflow doesn't hang for several seconds during re-indexing.

While I can see that might be an issue if you're using notes a lot, it wasn't my issue.

 

Mine was a stand-alone note, created by Zotero-File-New Note

Maybe a stand-alone note is not actually an item then since the option above File-New Note is File-New item? So a note belonging to an item, is indexed and a stand-alone note isn't? I'm just guessing.

A stand-alone note in zotero can't be edited like a normal entry - it has no meta-data that I can see, which supports my guess about it not being an item. I can't change the item type therefore. 

 

Notes belonging to items are being searched, which is fantastic.

 

It's really not an issue, but perhaps good to know. I only have 4 stand alone notes, but sometimes I use them while working. I can create parent items for them, and then they can be found.

 

It makes sense that they aren't really an 'item' in the library as they can't be cited, they have no creator or title. As I understand it.

EDIT: Maybe I'm wrong about it not having a title, as the JSON export clearly shows it does, but it's just taken from the first line of the note.
